Iam pretty sure i'm going to be a Rifleman i'm almost a master scout at the moment and pistol specialist, was going for master marksman then i thought.......what's the point? So i have a few rifleman questions. You guys all seem like a good bunch i don't see a lot of complaining/flames/or whining from rifleman because you all seem pretty content with your profession. (or maybe i'm not looking hard enough hehehe)

1. I think rifle's are the best LOOKING weapon in the game nothing looks better than toting a big rifle around i just don't want to be useless toe to toe. Does anyone have some tips for making the Rifleman effective at close quarters?

2. Is rifle XP waaaaaaaay harder to get than carbine/pistol?

3. In my experiences it goes Pistol/Rifle/Carbine (easiest to hardest xp to get) would anyone else agree/disagree?

4. Since rifle is a slower firing weapon do you find it easier to get rifle xp in groups or solo?

5. How long (hours played) did it take you to master rifle and was that grouped or solo?

6. What are the best tactics (special combo's) to use for xp'ing up the rifleman trees and what type of mobs do they work best on?

7. What other skills should i get to supplement my rifleman'ing? currently I have Pistol specialist/half the scout tree and almost half the medic tree.

I know that's a lot but i'm VERY picky and want to be sure that rifleman is something i'd really enjoy.......i know i can always sell it back if i don't like it but that's an aweful lot of work to sell back.

Thank you in advance for anyone who can shed some light on this laundry list of questions.

Take up another skill. For a riflemanclose quarters = death. You can use warning shot to keep mobs away from you, but if they hit you in melee you take 2x the damage.

2. Is rifle XP waaaaaaaay harder to get than carbine/pistol?

Not sure, pistol seemed a lot easier when I was getting master marksman.I thinkboth pistol and carbine get knockdown whichreally helps in both PvE and PvP.

3. In my experiences it goes Pistol/Rifle/Carbine (easiest to hardest xp to get) would anyone else agree/disagree?

Agreed on the pistol / rifle thing but don't know much about carbine.

4. Since rifle is a slower firing weapon do you find it easier to get rifle xp in groups or solo?

Solo.

5. How long (hours played) did it take you to master rifle and was that grouped or solo?

Not master yet, lost count of the hours. Solo for 95% of the time.

6. What are the best tactics (special combo's) to use for xp'ing up the rifleman trees and what type of mobs do they work best on?

1) Mindshot 1, Mindshot 2, Headshot 2 till they are 20 - 25m away then warning shot them off.

2) Get a pet, get up to flushing shot 2, send pet to get 5 mobs on it, ae kill the mobs.

7. What other skills should i get to supplement my rifleman'ing? currently I have Pistol specialist/half the scout tree and almost half the medic tree.

Medic is nice. Exploration is good because you'll be doing a lot of running.

My main tip is, don't do it unless you're sure. We are not uber and you don't want to get to master and find you'd rather be a pistoleer.

Don't depend on Rifleman in close quarters --- there ARE no close quarters riflemen. At close quarters you become either (a) Deadman, (b) Melee Man, (c) Pistol Man or (d) Running-away-man.

I use Two Hand Sword, myself, since (a) swords look cool too ( ) and (b) the Two Hand Sword has the -option- to hit the Mind Pool (which the rifle hits with specials)...

Is rifle XP waaaaaaaay harder to get than carbine/pistol?

Well, if you're GROUPED it would be harder to get rifle exp for the simple reason you don't fire as quickly as the others do (unless you use a spraystick). But solo (as most riflemen tend to be) you get as much exp as the others, since you do all the damage. The rifle's not a -fast- weapon, though (at the early levels)... so it may seem like exp is slower than with a pistol, which can blast-blast-blast.

How long (hours played) did it take you to master rifle and was that grouped or solo?

I solo exclusively, and I've spent my 250 skill points several times over (was Novice Image Designer, sold it back to Novice Entertainer, then bought it back up to ID-4 then sold it back again )... I've been playing with the rifle since Release Day and I've got Sniper II, Conceal I and Special Abilities I.... but, I also dance a lot and do a lot of quests... and I was up to Casual III in Tailoring for a while...

What are the best tactics (special combo's) to use for xp'ing up the rifleman trees and what type of mobs do they work best on?

I used to open with a MindShot then switch to HeadShots until the foe charged, then either warning shot (never seems to work for me) or run away shooting (impractical, since we STOP running to shoot) or switch to Sword.

Since I got ConcealShot, I find myself using it a lot. I also use FlurryShot sometimes... it damages a random pool (but most often health, then action, then mind).... so I can use my Sword in melee without any specials --- the head hit specials with the sword DO hit the mind pool, but they drain ME too, so I prefer to use the simple autoattack to finish off critters that the FlurryShot wounded. FlurryShot also makes the foe dizzy, but I've tried to sweep them (swordsman skill) and they have not yet been knocked down. Of course I don't fight many humanoid NPCs with that tactic....

What other skills should i get to supplement my rifleman'ing? currently I have Pistol specialist/half the scout tree and almost half the medic tree.

Medic's handy, sure... but it uses up Mind to use medicines... and our specials burn mostly Mind... but I suppose if you were getting chewed up in melee and still had Mind to spend, it would be wise to spend it to boost a faltering health / action stat.

You definitely need a close-quarters combat profession, either straight melee or Pistol. Beyond that, you're pretty much wide open. I was a burgeoning Tailor (quitting that soon), an image designer, a dancer, a musician, a Novice Ranger... of course by the time I get to Master Rifleman I'll have to whittle down those side professions (esp. if I am also getting some higher-teir Swordsman abilities).

Also... since you are fairly new, I have TWOvery important pieces ofadvice:

(1) Run missions for money and buy yourself the best weapons you can use. The faster the weapon, the faster you can kill and get XP. For people heading to Marksman: Laser rifles and Scout Blasters. Buy good ones and get them sliced by a good weaponsmith.

As soon as you get your cert for Laser Rifle.... BUY ONE. The dang things can Kill! Also get a Spraystick (the name is odd, and itlooks goofy but is considered a rifle). It does less damage than a Laser but does it much faster. I switch back and forth between them depending on the situation.

(2) Get some good medic skills. This will save you from spending your life incapped or dead. Once you get the timing down, you can hunt tougher animals (more XP faster!!) because you can heal yourself while you fight. I am also master medic, but I'm not sure you need to go that high. But go at least far enough to make Stimpack B's. (A's are weak, B's stronger, C's very nice, D's kick A$$.) Not only can you keep yourself alive, but you can keep your buddies moving too if you group.
Medic isnt as much fun to progress in (well, not for me) but I absolutely LOVE having the skills!!
Good way to get your med XP up fast is to get a hold of some medicine and hit the Cantinas and heal the entertainers. Sometimes theres a lot of people doing this, but other times, "You da man!".

Anyway, these are the rantings of just one person. They may not be everybody's method, but hey, "I did it MY way..."

I don't want to intentionally mislead you...

Thinking back.... That 50K XP was probably more like 2+ hours. The problem with being in the heat of battle is you lose track of time. It seemed like an hour to me, but almost 1K per minute CAN'T be right! But at any rate I earned 50K XP in a fairly short amount of time in that group.

Regarding Grouping vs. Solo...

Up until this weekend, I would have told you 'solo'. I am Master Marksman and have just started up the Rifleman tree. Groups are a funny thing... sometimes you spend so much time getting organized and trying to get everyone moving and working together that NOTHING gets accomplished. So I went up to Master Marksman pretty much solo.

Now I'm novice rifleman and when I logged on today I was thinking I would solo again. But before I got going, I saw a friend online and said hello. He said he was getting a group together on Tatooine in Mos Eisely to hunt dewbacks. So I flew over and turned out we had a group of about 10 people. We got lucky and found a spawning ground for dewbacks and womp rats close to the city. Everybody was there to kill animals and we went crazy. I earned almost 50K XP in probably less than an hour. Many had pistols and carbines and were hitting the HA pools. At the same time, me and one other used rifles and tore up the Mind pools. I was getting pretty much 700 - 1300 or more per dewback. Maybe 300 - 500 on the large womp rats.

Anyway, I'm no pro at this game, but hunting solo I was happy to get 40K per night for maybe 5 or 6 hours of grinding it out. Needless to say I was THRILLED when I hit Sniper 1 today. So in my humble opinion I NOW think there is MOREPOTENTIAL for greatnesswith a group, but you have to keep things moving, have the right dynamics in the group, and find a good spot so that everyoneis happy.

Hope this helps a little bit....
