do riflemen get 2xALL damage inflicted to them while holding their rifle or 2xmelee(sp?) damage while holding their rifle?

Just melee, I do very good against the humanoid npcs that use guns. But If I fight anything that melees im instantly dead if im holding my rifle. I think it 2.5x dmg but im not sure.
