I'd like to bag in so I can keep novice artisan. Is it actually helpful at all or no?

aim is good for novice riflemen, and suppression fire works good with our dizzy for a nice kd.

if nothing else ranged 1 is good for getting appr xp if you ever need it. there are plenty of ranged fighters with maxed out combat xp that may sell or give you the xp.

ranged support tree has some ranged defence mods, defence against surprise shot (useless) and the /aim command which could come in handy. Warning shot is good against creatures... although i dont know how good suppression fire is, since you cant use it with flurry to knock things down.
