Thread: How often are people using cover in PvP and is it effective?

I have gone SF and then used cover to hide in a public place (away from things that can detect me) to wait on enemy players. Once, I was too close to the edge of a radar of another player (a Jedi, no less) and got detected before I had time to cover up and then killed. Another time, it wasn't immediately obvious what blew my cover, either another player who happened to be passing on a speeder or a mobile NPC who spawned unexpectedly. Anyway, another Jedi killed me when I showed up on the radar.

I never got the chance to take a concealed shot at a red dot who wasn't a Jedi.

Is cover at all effective for hiding and trying to pick off enemy players? Does it make a difference what weapon you use? I was curious to see what would happen if I used a Tusken rifle to fire instead of an energy weapon, where you can see the laser bolts pretty easily, maybe more so at night.

The idea of using this new ability to harass the enemy seemed appealing. Now I'm wondering if it's good for anything, other than perhaps hunting or picking off low-level NPCs.

Thoughts?

Only time I've used cover was to stalk a jedi target, Get off a concel shot and then sniper shot. Kick up and then do the combat dance.

Can't ever use cover in full scale PvP though because anyone or thing near you un covers you. I always get discovered by my own group(may thing can be fixed?)

Im master rifleman and does quite alot of PvP.

I would say that Covering Up (c-up) is best used in big battles/small wars outside towns.
I always use c-up before the enemy comes charging, they are unaware of me and starts fumbling around when I start shooting.

Elsewise the C-up is excellent for recon/spying on incoming enemies at wars, just dont lie near the main path of the enemies.

And I really hope the devs would change/fix the un-cover thing so grouped players or friendly (friendly faction based) NPC's wont uncover you by coming near, its just like your friends is giving you away in the midst of a battle.

I use it all the time epsically in the bestine SP.

I fly in overt then quicky go to the side and /cover

Next I wait for overt players and i conceal or sniper shot them, sometimes I kill them beofre they hit me onc.

The tactic is also great for avoiding jedi

C-up like has been said is an excellent recon tool and it also is a fast "force multiplier." Last night we had a few people in AH and a team of 5 of us RM's "left" or so they thought. We went covered and sure enough feeling confident the Rebels went overt, as soon as they did "poof" all sorts of tracer fire; they were quickly dispatched and were laughing at how they thought they were gonna get the upper hand.

RIP LeBT.....Now continuing Vaders orders with SHOCK and killing Rebels for the Empire...ahh screw it..killin Rebels cause I D*** well like it!

Does it make a difference in the choice of the weapon? Do Tusken rifles have much of a burst? I wonder if they're fairly undetectable. Also, I tend to use brown clothing to help reduce visibility.

I think an incredible tactic would be to take three overt master riflemen (more than that probably wouldn't work) and arrange them in a triangular fashion along the edges of a starport bay. It would be a bloodbath for the one or two non-Jedi overts who show up and it could seriously ruin the party for a single Jedi who shows up.

God I would love to try this.

Aside from the /tar bug, it would be great if they could fix it so friendlies wouldn't give you away.

Anyone with a good tactic, please share.

the only time i have ever used C-up is spying SP for enemy overts and when jedi are fighting djk i tend to sneak off and go c-up to provide hidden support, so that the djk dont decide to get in a last ditch kill by going for the nearest non jedi

Very valuable tactic I find... although did lead to 20 mins "cat and mouse" with a cloaked Jedi once... Also good for Covert Ops.. know the enemy's plans while their still making them...

In my experience, cover works fairly well in PvP if you use it sparingly and carefully. In really large scale PvP, a WW1 / US Civil War situation tends to develop where the opposing sides are organized into lines that are dug into defensive areas facing each other.

In those situations, I've had pretty good luck with taking cover outside of normal radar range and crawling to a position roughly 45 meters to the flank of your side's line, and 5-10 meters forward. From this position, you wait till an enemy tries a direct advance. Usually, they will get to about 50m or so in front of the friendly line and suddenly become the target of a whole heck of a lot of fire. In the confusion, they are much less likely to notice your blaster bolts approaching from the flank, and you can contribute pretty decent damage with conceal shots, especially if you preserve them for key situations (when the target is low on health and could be incapped). This is a fun role to play, but you're not central to the action, and if the enemy attempts a flanking manuever to your side of the line, you're pretty much screwed.

Another fun role to play is damage control in situations where the opposing line manages to advance near your line, especially if some melee types start mixing it up with your fragile medics. For this, you can sit 40-50m behind the front of your line and make it your sole objective to take on any important targets that break into or near the line. Again, you won't be central to the action, but it is a useful role in larger battles.

Covered recon is pretty useful too. Sometimes the opposing side will set up a medical recovery area behind their line but leave it open to a ambush from behind. I've managed to sneak back around while under cover and take out a doctor before they could get assistance, or finish off key attackers that are retreating for medical attention.

I'd say that in general, you might contribute more to small scale battles with pure damage-dealing aggression, but some of the stuff you can accomplish while under cover can be pretty beneficial and fun to try.

Oh, one final thought. Covered tactics are a lot better when you have good crawl speed. A lot of people note that crawl speed is incredibly low, and basically give up on it. But, you can achieve pretty good crawl speed rates if you get your terrain negotiation into the 70-100 range. If you take 4000 scout, you'll be sitting at +40. With terrain negotiation clothing from your local BE, you can crank that up pretty fast. Or, group with a 3xxx Squad Leader, and you'll be at 90 TN. With crawl speed in those upper ranges, you'll have much better luck being able to relocate to a safe position if you see someone drawing a bead on you.

Is BE clothing working now? The last I heard it was broken.

It's not a be all end all skills, but it definately has it's uses. I mainly use it when stalking Jedi (MBH/MR). It takes forever to crawl where I need to go, but it allows me to time and place my first shot in such a manner that with patience could almost gurantee a kill. The main problem I have with cover is the crawl speed, I get uncovered fairly often but if I could move fast enough I could avoid that while under cover. At this point I am considering using cloak along with cover for my purposes. If I pull Cloak then it will allow me to move at significantly faster speeds while being undetected, and when I find a spot I like, I can simply go prone and cover then conceal shot hopefully without ever breaking my cloak/cover. I am not far enough along to have cloak along with cover yet so can't say that it will work as I envision but it'll be nice if it does lol.

As a BH I have incorporated /cover as my main apporach tatic on my marks. I have crawled from one end of Tat to the other. As stated earlier /cover is very effect as a first strike, recon, escapse tatic. I like to position myself between a Jedi and their "Safehouse". It's pretty funny when you get off the first shot and they fumble towards the house. By the time they reach me I have them incapped or close to it. I stand, db, collect, and ride.
