This is probably a crazy idea with the combat revamp on the horizon.
However I was thinknig a while about some people on here talking about melee attacks for riflemen (with rifle-butts etc). Then I also got to thinking about the "force lance" that is used in the Andromeda TV series.
Which then lead me to this idea: Instead of putting a stat boosting onto a rifle, how about adding a melee attachment (that would wear out like a power up does).
A fine example would be a bayonet.
For those PvE'ers among us, just imagine, sniping a mountain squill (with auto fire), then, when it finally works out where you are, it charges for you and when it's in melee range you finish it off with a lunge for your bayonet equipped rifle.

a nice idea, but then the nay sayers will say take a melee class to do what you are talking about

i dunno i had this argument many time pistoleer have pistolmelee 1 which whacks the guy on the head with his pistol knocking them to the ground.... riflebutt does make sense but i think its all to do with balance and thats why the skill is not a rifleman skill.

Well an alternative would be to make the necessity for both set of skills. Say with the bayonet you need rifles plus some sword or fencer.
Conversly you could put a little blaster on both ends of a vibro axe for ranged pikeman attack, but only if he/she has rifle/carbine/pistol skills.
