I'm currently running around as a CL 40 Novice Rifleman (4,4,x,3 I think). I'm primarily a master crafter, but needed some muscle to place and get back to harvies, etc... I have no skill points left and don't want to give up MasterArch/Artisan(and some Novice Merchant for storage/vendor space).

I really love rifle (I was captain of my high school team many moons ago), but it is difficult to solo stuff at my level. Can you guys recommend the best weapon for a CL40? And how should I get it sliced?

Finally, what CL is a Master Marksman? Would I be better served becoming that & giving up all the specials I enjoy as a novice Rifleman?

Thanks for any input.

Master Marksman by itself is only a mere CL16.

From what I gathered on your post, you're at least Master Artisan / Master Architect, leaving 110 SPs left over for combat.

If you're concerned only with personal safety and defense I would probably go with:
Master Artisan / Master Architect / and Master Carbineer or Master Pistoleer... not Rifleman.

Reasons:
* You'll be at CL55. Having only Master Marksman for your combat skills makes you CL15. A big difference since your low CL would let you get clobbered by NPCs / MOBs. Getting Master Rifleman / Carbineer / Pistoleer gets you access to CL54 weapons.

* You're not a dedicated ranged fighter; you won't have enough General and Rifle Ranged Mods to be truly outstanding with Rifles, even for defense. Master Rifleman will simply be too slow for you in nasty situations out there in the wild.

* In all likeliness, you'll get ambushed while you're tending to your harveters. Your lack of additional General / Rifle Ranged Mods will hurt you, especially speed. Not good when you're ambushed by several MOBs / NPCs.

* Rifleman is very poor for personal defense and for allowing your character to escape.
*** The snare (Impr.Kneecap Shot) is horrible.
*** The speed, esp. with not much more than Master Rifleman, is horrible.
*** The encumbrance with a Rifle equipped is second worst in the game (Commando Hvy.Weapons are the lousiest). Very, very bad for trying to escape.

* Getting Master Carbineer gives you a very reliable ranged KD, a good snare, and decent enough speed to make a difference in your escape. Carbine ranges typically go in between 35-50m. A good compromise.

* Or, getting Master Pistoleer is quite effective for personal defense. The Root is still good to go but on shorter timers now (Stopping Shots), but at least doesn't break on damage. Pistols however have short ranges, but then again, if you're only fighting defensively, the baddies are already in pistol range!

You can still go with Master Rifleman to supplement your Master Artisan / Master Architect. It'll still get you CL55.

As for a good CL40 weapon... IMO, CL40 weapons and "good" usually don't go in the same sentence.
