I am currently a Ranger and am working up the Pistoleer tree. I'm thinking about switching to Rifleman because it fits better into my idea of what a Ranger should be. I have one question however. In PvE, if you aren't able to take down the creature before it closes in on you then how do you take it down once it's on top of you. I know that rifles are worth much at close range so I'm curious how you guys kill the mob. I plan on mastering Ranger and one combat profession and then dabbling in medic. I like the idea of the damage I can do with a rifle but I also like the versality of the range I would have with pistols. Maybe not as powerful or accurate at long range but I can still use it when a mob closes in on me. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I went Master Ranger for a brief while. Never did figure out the purpose of that profession. I liked the tracking, but I never used traps much and the camping was a real biitch. I think you will find Master Rifleman MUCH more fun.
In answer to your question, you are correct that rifles sukk up close. It is nice to have some alternate skills you can switch to if the target gets to you. However, if you are buffed and can withstandtheir attacks, or if you don't mind healing yourself over and overwhile finishing them off,you can still killwith a rifle up close... it just takes a while. Nice pistol skills or unarmed skills might be good till you make it about halfway up the tree.
BTW, this is not true at Master. At master, I still hit most of my shots (every second) up close. But even at 50% up close, when you are firing once a second, you are going to do some damage.

Tim,
I'm currently in the process of doing exactly what you are thinking about. I'm currently Master Rangerette, 3-2-3-3 in Rifles and have maintained Markswoman at 4-4-0-0. I plan on slowly dropping pistol as needed to advance up to master Riflewoman. Wayne is right that once at master it should not be to much trouble to finish off the mob, but I think for me dropping pistols as needed is the way to go to get where I want to be

i dunno just mastered rifles by soloing pikets, they get in close just keep headshot 3 them (suprising thing is only 1 every now and then miss at close range) could be because there size isnt excaclty hard to miss
oh yer and make sure ur fully buffed with brandy maxed and they wont trouble ya , i did it without any armour too

You can also go up ranged support tree in Marksman and use the special /warningshot or is it /threatenshot? One of those shots will scare a creature away, while the other while aggro the animal to you. I believe /warningshot will, when creature attacks, scare off animals from attacking you.
