I say rifleman because even soloing, I never get a scratch on me. Grouping is the only time I ever get hurt, and it's usually when someone does something dumb. Maybe I haven't met a good pistoleer, but it seems to me they get the crap kicked out of them.

So I say rifle, simply on the virtue that I never have down time unless something dumb happens.

since your a creature handler i would think riflemen is nice since your pets can tank and then you could just start doing massive mind dmg and its also a good PvP class... a lot of melee related classes ive met has no more than 500mind... some ocassionaly do... so if you can put that together...mindshot spec + t21 rifle = dead melee...and the mind shot bleed is brutal also =P

I too am in the same situation. Since you have to be within 35m of your pet to get CH exp I have found pistol to be easier.

I prefer rifle but having to run after a fleeing monster to stay in CH exp range is just easier with a pistol. Once you top out on CH exp rifle will be handy to sit back and snipe.

About Creature handlering.

Are there any pets that do mind damage. With pistol, it does health so me and my pet share the work. with rifle. the pets just blocks for me and i shoot it down with mind shots. also i think its 40m that you have to be to get CH exp. which sucks cuz i usually stay 50 feet away with rifle and then when the creature is about to die it runs. i say i miss about half CH exp when i use rifle. Are they going to fix this? it didn't use to be like this right?

"Since you have to be within 35m of your pet to get CH exp I have found pistol to be easier."

Well you only have to be within 35 meters when the creature you are fighting dies to get the exp. So you can fire from a bit farther back and run in when the monster your fighting is near death. Another thing is you can still land plenty of shots if you go prone at about 35 meters.

Personally I use a dlt20a i believe the ideal range is 40 meters so it hits just fine from that range. If you get a dlt20a made buy a highly skilled crafter they are VERY nice. The one I have is something like100-160ish dmg 5.4 speed unsliced. I personally like it better then the laser rifle i have for expingbecause of thelow dmg variance, speed. and low hamcost. Ican fire headshots all day w/o running out of mind pool. The laser rifle i have hits mymind pool for like 100pluseach headshot i use.

My main, on Chilastra, is a Rifleman with a Novice Creature handler (also novice in about four other professions --- dabbling now). With a pet to tank, Rifleman OR Pistoleer would work fine. Pistol has the advantage that it affects Health and Action, like most pet attacks will. Pistols are also (generally) faster.

I haven't crunched the numbers, but my would-be-smuggler on another server uses a pistol and does like 200 - 300pt hits with a bazaar-bought Scout Blaster. My Rifleman does 300 - 600pt hits (averaging more in the high 400s probably) but the speed is only 5.7 or so on the DLT20a I have.

The pistol seems to have no trouble firing while running while the rifleman seems to almost STOP when firing. Makes logical sense, I suppose, but it's still annoying to have your movement halted briefly, and of course when being chased it means you get hit more often and while holding a rifle you take 300% damage or so. Sure, my pistol-packing smuggler gets hit a bit more, but for like 40 - 60pts a few times. My rifleman gets hit for 200 - 400pts in melee. Doesn't take many of -those- to do me in.

Rifleman's good at extreme range, when your mask scent is working and you can take cover within range of all your targets. It requires patience and stealth. The pistol, you can just run up and start cappin' critters and then run away firing. Depends on the playstyle you like best, I suppose. After playing the pistol-user for a little while, going back to the rifle seemed so slow... /shrug
