Thread: Wondering on becoming a rifleman, NEED tips.

I have today about 1/3 the boxes in carbineer, and almost half the boxes in ranger. I have some medic and entertainement skils(the latter will be dropped as I need points) My character is a Bothan.

Since half the specialattacks you get in the carbineer tree is KD/posturechange, I have decided to give up on this profession, seeing as now I have to get BHCarabine skills to be effective in pvp.

I am aiming for master Ranger as I like PvE the most, but I would like to be able to pvp a little as well. I play mostly in groups, with some soloing.

I have already expert rifle(marksman tree) halfway to specialist.

I think rifle would suit character since I get a bonus to the coverskill as a Bothan, and I aim to make him to a master hunter.

My biggest question is this: Do I need to get hold of a prenerf T-21 to be a good rifleman? Or is the weapons that are available today good enough for a setup like mine.

Any other tips also greatly aprreciated

As our class stands right now post patch....

.....

Run, run far, and just join the flocks probably swarming for BH and the greatest insult to riflemen ever, that new LLC.

If endless grind against mobs that don't bring friends, fighting blue cons for the rest of your natural life, becoming the "new commando class", enjoy missing at ideal rangemore then any class, and praying mobs don't insta warp death you sounds fun though, then yes by all means become a riflemen.

I was trying not to be as cynical as Dragonkat, but it's hard. He's pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Don't even think about Take Cover as it stands now... especially if you're also a ranger --- something about Rangers and Take Cover introduces a bug where, when you stand up after taking cover, your movement speed is reduced to a walk when "running" and to a veritable crawl when actually "walking". Only way to clear it reliably is to re-log.

Riflemen can kill single targets with no BAF allies nearby assuming a lot of things happen: the rifleman doesn't run out of Mind stats by using specials, the target doesn't discover the rifleman and warp onto him, you don't miss ----- someone posted somewhere that rifles were "best" at long range. Not true. We may have positive modifiers at extreme range, but they're not enough: a pistol is still just as accurate at 64m as we are, and they fire more often, and over time have more damage per second.

If they ever fix the /conceal and /maskscent and /take cover then a Rifleman Ranger combo would probably be a very effective one. But as it stands, /concealshot is the only ability I use with any regularity. I simply cannot do enough damage with headshots and mindshots to kill the foe before it starts gnawing on my leg. I tried running and shooting, once, but I missed so often it was laughable. And there's always the risk you'll run into another band of aggros... but running DOES at least give your bleed time to work... just not an effective combat tactic on a world with crowds of aggro things around. Also, when firing with a rifle, while running, I seem to STOP, put the rifle to my shoulder, and fire.... which, of course, lets the monster get closer to me... so I can only run-and-gun and hope for a random hit when the monster is much much much slower than me.

EDIT: I'll apologize for the cynicism above, well a lil. It's just that as it stands we just aren't a viable combat class in the slightest unless you plan to get master (and good luck getting there too)

Too many issues with our own skills combined with unfixed bugs *coughWARPING!cough* just make it a chore and not fun in the slightest for me to play my riflemen ranger anymore, even more so with the smackdown ranger harvests took.

Cynical? disillusioned? Noooo not in the sightest! Now sarcastic and irritated? Heh you better believe it.

Thanks for your posts.

Not very positive responses, tho

Aggros doesn't bother me much as a ranger. I have both mask scent at a very high level, and conceal kits, so I can run most places pretty freely.

I have traps to slow7root my enemies also.

With this in mind, is the switch from carbine to rifle worthwhile?

If it hadn't been for ranger snares and roots then I would have thrown my rifle out the window weeks ago, I honestly don't know how anyone could work though this class without them, if you go riflemen the best advice I can offer is watch the timing. See how long it takes for a mob to charge, then thow the trap 1 shot before that. The only catch being of course you need to be within 50m which isn't ideal for most rifles, but if you get lucky and the trap hits run to ideal and you're good, if it doesn't though hello mr clong center 50% of the time.

I could with bleeds and headshot solo red con torturs this way, but the cost in traps and downtime between was still horrible. And again against any mob that brings friends even ranger traps won't matter.

Thanks again for the answers, Dragonkat.

Are you using the old t-21 or the new one?

New one and I'm getting the feeling it's a joke, 112-340ish 7.2 speed. It's a glorfied laser rifle with better min damage essentaily. You'll get more out of using a sliced powered up dlt20a then using a T21 imho.

Not master and only just now about to get my first area attack (flushing 2) so my opinion on the class may change greatly after, though I dunno. in total 2-1-2-1 almost 2-1-3-2. So hey might just be low end bias I'm suffering from.

As for pvp it's doable for me, though if you run into a BH get ready for eyeshot spam before you get that second headshot off. Faction pets HELP get 3 before even thinking of going out in my opinion, otherwise 90% of the time if it's even 2 on 1 it's clone time pre master. It seems though that masters have a much better time at pvp then low end, kinda renforces something I dislike about the class right now, the fact it really is "all or nothing." the difference between 4-4-4-4 and master is HUGE
