Thread: The deal on Aim and Cover
Aim: if you look at your targeted mob there will be some white numbers to the left side of its stat bar (like -12,+33 etc). If its negative then your more like to miss your shot - the larger the number the harder to hit. You ideally wnat the largest positive number to guarentee a good hit. If the target is moving it will make it harder to hit. Aim gives you a bonus to hit (increases this white number - not sure if its a fixed value). Being prone or kneeling will aslo improve you hit probability. The best shot condition is a stationary target, at optimum range for your wep, in prone, using Aim move. Aim does not stack.
Cover: I think it just reduces the targets ability to see who is attacking it - and gives you a bit of defense bonus vs long range attacks - ie you take a little less damage.
I could be wrong.
Actually Cover has a very important benefit. It allows you to get off an extra shot before your target closes on you. This usually means the creature will die before it gets to you or slightly afterwards as opposed to it standing there beating you.
Im still a bit confused on aim. So what your saying is that if I want to do 2 aimed head shots while prone i hit:
Prone, aim, headshot, aim, headshot?
Do the aims cost against the 2 shots I get while prone? Also, does cover make it so i can get 3 shots while prone? That would be pretty cool.
aim just increase's your chance to hit. take: aim - headshot. in RL, you take aim at his head and fire. after you shoot, do you still have is head aimed? not really, darn recoil. so yes, aim increases you chance to hit with your next attack, where ever it may be. what i would suggest is rather then aiming, just get to optimal range and take cover. i only use aim if forced to do long range or if i'm too lazy to move. :-D

From what I can tell, the number that appears next to the target's HAM bars is a relative notation of your current chance to hit. It ranges from -50 to +50, for a 100 point range.
I could be wrong, but that is how it appears to me. Especially since my rifle has a listed -70 at zero range, but the number on the target never goes below -50.
Ok, here is what I have discovered using Aim and Take Cover.
Get into ideal range for whatever Rifle you are using. Lie prone to get the biggest bonus (As people have said the little white number to the left of the targets HAM bars.)
Take Cover: This makes it harder for the target to see/find you when they do turn around. Does not always work for me but I am sure that it will work more as I go up in Ranged Weapon Support.
Without Take Cover: You will get two free shots on the target.
With Take Cover: You will get up to Three free shots on the target.
Now I usually type this in after I get the confirmation that the Take Cover has worked:
/aim;/headshot2;/aim;/headshot2
You can use a macro to accomplish the same thing. I type in only 2 because right now for me its not guarenteed that I will get the third free shot. I then get ready for if the mob charges or if I can do a third shot.
Aim gives you a bonus to your "To Hit" roll. I usually get +20 to the attack. IE if the white number is a +30 it will become a +50.
So, aim and take cover really help. Beware though, Aim will make it take longer for your shot to actually fire. So don't use unless you have the extra time to spare on the shot. This isbest used for Soloing.
