Thread: 64 meters = 70 yards
the reason it is 64 meters is because that is about as far as you can see a target in the game. if the distance was farther than that most folks computers would not be able to render graphics out to 1km which is about max distance for real world effective rifle shots. some things had to be "fudged" for gameplay.
the real problem is that the only specials that work as they logically should are the heavy weapons. i think that heavy weaponsshould be medium range but that is a different arguement. rifles carbines and pistols specials should not work outside their general optimal ranges.
Irealize 64 meters is about the max for viewing in the game, but the point I was making was that the ranges were the same for pistols and rifles, expect that pistols are allowed to hit from 64m -0m. We are effective only at 64-60m. Lets cap ranges for the guns or make a pistol very inaccurate at the rifle and less accurate at the carbine range.
ahh to answer that. the reason that is is because once you exceed your maximum range the negatives do not really effect higher level pistol users. pistols miss outside range just as much as rifles do but the fire MUCH faster so they get more hits in over time. the hit rates are about the same for rifle and pistol outside range. pistol just seem to hit more because more shots are flying down range.
personally i think that pistol specials should notwork beyound 20 meters. carbine specials should only work between 21-40 meters.rifle specials should only work between 40-64 meters. that would solve all the frickenarguing over who is more powerful. if your engaging a rifleman with a pistol at 64 meters he should blow your fricken head off. if a rifleman is engaging a pistol userunder 20 meters the rifleman should be shot through the eye and killed. simple as that allskill expenditurebeing equal.
bounty hunters should be inferior to each of the other elite skills in their given range and make up for that lack by being able to use their range of weapons. a BH should not be able to outrifle a riflewoman at 64 meters but instead use her tactics to engage the person in carbine or pistol or LLC range and take them out that way. each elite skill should be the best in their area. the BH should be decent as they are in all areas and use their nuggets to win instead of just spamming specials.
but common sense doesnt mean much and there is no real testing on TC so its a moot point. fact is pistols are faster over time than rifles so their misses do not stand out as much as rifle misses.
As master gunfighter I can honestly say that I miss over half of the time at that range. As a real pistol shooter, I agree with the fact that I SHOULD NOT hit things at that distance...period. But this is not year 2000 we are talking about, we are shooting lasers. With that in mind, the amount of damage should not change depending on range, only the odds of hitting due to a longer bore length and distance between sights.
On the other end of the spectrum, I RL hunt with rifles. There is no way I can accurately hit anything at close range. The old addage for pistols and shotguns of "pretend it's your finger and you are pointing at your target" does not apply to rifles. You have to shoulder the weapon, aim, fire. If you have all the time to aim and hit true, then you just destroyed the animal.
I think rifle damage and accuracy should be much higher than pistols, but penalties should skyrocket the closer you get to your target. The opposite with pistols, closer=definate hit (at novice pistoleer level) with chances of a miss rising exponentially the farther from your target you get. Damage need not change with range, only chances of a hit.
The main problem we are facing is not the developers, it's the players who want it all. Every class needs its strengths and weaknesses and people don't like to lose. The developers are just pawns in the battle of the babies.
I completely disagree with the not being able to use specials at close range and long range for pistoleers, carbineers, and rifleman. For the super weapons like the llc and flamethrower I feel it is sorta warranted since they are like one shot kills.
The rest of us it would be devasting to, especially rifleman and carbineers. After the initial volleys the fights almost always wind up close range for me. Since our regualr shots hit health, we would be starting the fight all over again on another pool at close range.
well it depends on the rifle type and what is on it. in RL i use a .458winmag and a AR15 both are incredibly accurate at very short ranges if you now how your rifle functions. however in SWG there is no real balance. the balance cries seem to be nerf this and buff that. there is no thought behind how to do it in a non-traditional idiocy nerf herding manner. if you want to know how to balance a game go take a look at BF1942. no class in that game is uber. all can be defeated easily by the others under given circumstance. what we have in SWG pvp wise is one group trying to nerf herd all the others to make their class uber.
pistoleers whine about the BH---> BH whine about the commandos---->riflemen whine about the pistoleers.... all of it directed in a mindless fashion all aimed at nerfing everyone else, no thought given at all to real problems. this sort of imbecile mentality ruins the game for the vast majority of non-pvpers. like it or not the vast majority do not pvp.
i have tossed out an idea either build on it and modify, or come up with something other than "nerf the other guy but raise my power..." idiocy. im not saying its perfect by any stretch but it isnt a straight across the board nerf.
heres one for ya:
moenia pvp, got killed come back for a beautiful revenge tef on that lucky <edit> that got me.
So i line up in perfect range for my t-21, kneel and the mod is +40 or something.
The opponent is a master gunfighter. My only chance is this one head shot 3, anything else and im toast.
Not worrying I hit the hs3 button.
Long story short, i missed and his first return shot from the same distance and standing hit me and kncked me down, fight over. But wait, did i mention im a 4/1/2/2 rifleman, a SNIPER!?!?!? My only characteristic trait of rifle ability is AIMING! Only way to be any more freakin accurate is going master, do i have to be a master rifleman to hit withg consistency?
Well, as long people complain about everyone else, the game is going to sink farther and farther. I think the best way to make your point is be the person you don't like. Try them all out. Learn that in some way they all suck. Then make your choice on who you want to be.
I'm a ranger. I love it. At times I see joe novice toting his AT-ST through the woods as his bodyguard saying it's the only way to stay alive. That is a shame. To rely on firepower and not tactics. To learn the letter "a" "f" "g" etc... before you even try to learn the AI of your target. Those are the types of players killing the game (no, not the AT-ST...the mentality of the guy controling it).
This what I believe needs to happen to "balance" the game in PvP (seeing this is where most of the problems lie):
1)get a huge group of every profession. Make sure they know how to play, use their weapon, follow orders, and be objective
2) Have them duke it out with ALL developers watching the actions, outcome, tactics, specials, etc... of every player
3) Have everyone submit a report as to what went right and what went wrong with the team, the class, and what could be done to respolve the issue
4) Have every developer go over the reports and submit a report to the players with what they think should be done.
5) repeat until everyone is happy.
This would put PvP in a controled situation, even teaming and most of all filter out the immature player who wants it all. Once this is done there would be no more nerfs, only patching of bugs. That's just what I suggest. Go ahead and say it's a boneheaded idea but I think it would work
