Thread: Why are we penalised twice at close range?

At close range a rifleman has the largest penalty to hit of all the weapon types. Isn't this the penalty for choosing a rifle, yet I get hit for 2.5 x melee damage as well. This means that not only can I not shoot someone at close range, if they are a meleeI actually take extra damage just for holding a rifle in my hands!

There are numerous discussions about the 2.5 x melee damage on the forum, but none of the ones I have read have realised that it is not this issue on its own that is the problem. I don't mind being penalised at close quarters for using a rifle, but not twice for no reason at all.

Was this a secret when you decided to pick Rifleman as your profession? What I thought.

I know when my car has run out of gas too, but it doesn't mean I'm too stuck up and pompous to a gas station and fill it up.

Just out of interest, what was the point of your comment apart from:

"I've been playing since beta and know all about this class. If you had put as much time in as me you wouldn't need to ask such a stupid question"

Boy, I'm so glad there are helpful people like you in the game, it makes it so much better for everyone else.

My point was pretty obvious.

Lets use the running out of gas example you decided to use. What you are saying is youshould be able to suethe auto maker because you ran your car out of gas. That is what you are doing here. You complain about something that was not a secret. You had the choice and decided to pick a Rifleman knowing that it has its pluses and minuses. Now you think for some odd reason that the Dev's should change the profession all because you dont like the negatives of it.

By the way I never played in Beta, I didnt even start playing SWG tell 2 weeks after release.

Man, dont flame him, it is a secret! It is not in anything that I had read and it does not state it in the descriptions that I had seen. Atleast as much as I had read, they did not make it glaringly obvious anyhow. Only leared of the 2.5 modifier in the threads. So leave the guy alone, he was only asking a question and he never mentioned a law suit either so your analagy makes no sense. If you do not wish to answer what appears to be a dumb question to you just hit the "back" button on your browser and find a new thread.

To answer your question, there is not a very good reason. I think the thought was that you should be able to drop many of your enemies with your guns at long range through power and accuracy at range, so they needed to hit us with these penalties to "balance". Problem is we really dont have much of a long range advantage or a power one. But we do have some other uniqe skills that I beleive make this class worthwhile with some patiant training and understanding of how to work it. And it appears that the 2.5 multiplier will be lowered soon, or so the devs suggested.

I see it as another PvP nerf...

TKAs and other melee players probably didn't like getting kited so SoE brilliantly decided to put in the melee penalty so they get to beat the stuffing out of us if they manage to catch up.

Ofcourse, like most things, SoE isn't able to seperate PvE from PvP so by not thinking things through they just gave powerful 20k HAM mobs the ability to one shot us (other classes get enough time to burstrun away).

Ofcourse we USED to be able to kite some of those 20k HAM mobs, but thanks to SoE wanting to reduce the amount of money going around they made another change without thinking it through... un kitable mobs 99.9% of the time.

So now basically these changes added up to mobs we can't outrun and can't kill before they get to usand will kill us in 1 hit.

I guess in hindsight, it looks like most of our hard times are caused by a PvP nerf + a money nerf.

Add in the pathfinding exploit nerf and you get the teleporting mobs that kill us in 1 hit.

My vote... keep the 2.5 penalty for non-creature PvP and have no 2.5 penalty for non-humanoid pets and all PvE creatures...

The dirty little secret that I find the most disturbing is that if you move the mouse during the fight you get hit with the "riflman running" penalty. Even if you are prone, just moving the mouse loweres your "to hit" mod.

i dont have a problem with the 2.5x, what bothers me is the minus we get atclose range with weapons that are rated as rifles, but have barrels as short as pistols. ever look at the E-11 or a spraystick? T21's, laser,tusken....ect. are long rifles with long barrels and should have a heavy penalty for using them at close range. Guns with short or no barrel at all should have the same minus to hit that a pistol at close range.

If they did that, then we could still be effective enough at close range to not worry about the 2.5x

ive said this many times, i say give the 2.5x melee dmg to the pistoleers, i mean in a fight with a melee fighter, i would think u can defend urself better with a big rifle than a small pistol...

Need to get somewhere cheaply? I'm your man. Charter space flights. If for group hunting, it's free as long as im involved If for anything else, see me about fees(Alot cheaper than normal interplanetary transportation).

I am okay with close range penalties but I must say that Lobo's logic is just flawed, as usual. Lets face it. We are still playing in a form of beta. Whata class offers week might be different from the next. Many probably picked up pistoleer keeping in mind that they would get a nice AOE knockdown at master. Woops. I laugh when Lobo flames people for trying to "change" a profession.

"Now you think for some odd reason that the Dev's should change the profession all because you dont like the negatives of it."

I suppose the purpose of Commandos before their weapons got an upgrade was to do low damage with low accuracy and a slow attack speed. Riighttt. Its not simply a matter of choosing a profession based on what it has to offer as you have argued in countless posts.

"I chose my profession on what it offered and not what the description says blah blah blah"

Please...There is still balancing going on. Now if you wanted to argue how the melee penalty balances us then go ahead. Post something that is constructive and actually makes sense.

Isn't there a point-blank single/multiple from marksman that you can use? I started to and I hit much more often (pretty good effect with multiple). I can't deal with the damage, if a pet tanks and you are that close it's let me kill things at 20m. I don't keep that rifle if they attack me tho... sorry, x2.5 damage (at least while standing) really has to go...
