I am getting stomped into the ground when I have the rifle in my hand and get hit? Is there a damage mulitplier if I have rifle in hand? If I put a carbine in my hand I take half the damage from same creature? What gives.

yup you will get OWNED in seconds if whatever your fighting get's within melee range, so make sure to put that rifle away quickly once the enemy approaches you
