Thread: Sniper Kill shot..thoughts

Sniper one shot kill has been discussed on and off since the begining of the game. I've given it a little thought and think that a one shot kill is viable under certain conditions, but only for the master rifleman.

1. A killshot can only be performed while prone with normal movement and range modifiers in effect. This means that it is virtually useless in one on one PvP.

2. Once the killshot has been executed, the rifleman's HAM goes down to 5 on each bar. This means that it is an intensely risky shot, and death is likely to follow if the target is aggroed. The HAM cost is necessary because it ensures the sniper is in a safe and concealed position before executing the shot, and has no DOT applied. It ensures that the rifleman is vulnerable for period of time, so this shot cannot be spammed , nor can the rifleman heal directly after taking the shot.

3. A killshot would work well in factional battles as it means the players would have to work as a team, ie snipers being looked after my medics, while they recover and melee characters holding the enemy back until the sniper is ready to shoot again...indeed snipers will be hunting snipers on the battlefield!

4. During PvE, killshot would be fantastc, especially against nightsister elders, Krayts and Kimogilas....if it was that easy. The point of a killshot is either it kills or it misses and regardless of the outcome, your HAM will be 5-5-5 after each shot. Range and movement modifiers notwithstanding, there would be one more modifier which would work in relation to size of the mind pool. The larger the mind pool, the more difficult for the shot to stick. A Krayt may take over 10 shots before the shot sticks, and after each shot, even a Kreetle could kill you!

These are just my ideas. What are your thoughts?

Any type of one shot kill ability is far to powerful in a game like this. The ability to one shot kill another player leads to griefing and extensive resentment. Many of us remember the days when Commando weapons were first fixed and they were considered melee while Rifles were still suffering the melee damage penalty. It easily led to BH and Commandos one shot killing anyone with a Rifle. There was a huge outcry (even by BH and Commandos) to get it fixed.

Players want to have a chance to fight. A one shot kill negates that chance. It is a "I win" button.

In PvE similar issues. The ability to one shot kill a Krayt or any other high end MOB makes it far to easy (remember the AT-STs being used for this?) and makes loot far to easy to gather.

Even with dropping the HAM to 5's. With the rate you regen with buffs it isn't a major concern. Just wait a couple seconds then pop a stim. Or eat some food/drink to boost your Mind after it's low, then pop the stims. It's easy to negate that drop a couple times in a row.

Yes a Kreetle may kill you. But not Rifle with any sense is going to lay down in their nest to begin with. You find the open spot, wait a second or two to make sure nothing spawns, then go prone. And to be extra careful you leave your bike out right next to you. If you miss you can jump on the bike and take off before the Krayt can get to you.

I think the "one shot kill" already exists doesn't it? Think it's called an exceptional / legendary T-21

Or PH or just about an legendary weapon. Which is why they are so unbalancing.

true, true.

Unless of course I happen to get incredibly lucky and find one - in which case I'd have to disagree and say they are completely balanced and should remain unchanged

I'm sorry, but such a shot is quite simply not feasible to balance. There are far too many circumstances where it would be easy to abuse, not to mention overpowering rifleman in PvE, where we are arguably the most overpowered damaging class as is.

First, in PvP, I can quite easily set up a situation where I could slaughter massive amounts of the opposing side without them being able to defend themselves or counterattack. That’s bad for PvP as a whole, and we don’t need anything else that’s bad for PvP right now. Or ever for that matter.

Secondly, on PvE, of course it would be very nice to have a one shot kill against Nightsisters or Krayts (even if it wasn’t a one shot kill) it would make high end content even more trivial then it already is. There is already very little in game that I can not kill solo. Making me able to kill it all in one shot would be…ludicrous. It would be like playing quake on god mode.

Thanks for your views guys, I was just thinking out loud so to speak. I can see where you're coming from, and I agree.
