Most of the seasoned veterans in this profession have explained to this rookie that the ideal way to level up is to have a tank. Let someone or something take the damage while you fire. So, I looked at creature handler, which I qualified for(did not train in)tonight. Then a master creature handler explained to me that I would need to level up through the profession to get a creature with good hams to act as a tank. Understandable and expected. Then, he suggested that I could use droids. Combat and tanker droids. This is how he leveled up in Rifleman, before he considered Creature Handler. Just wanted to know if anyone has used droids before? If so, would you recommend or not.

I use both a 3500 HAM Probot and an 11K HAM Rancor at the same time
You can also find some relatively good HAM pets at lower CH levels.

i used to be master CH and pets are a very good way to power level rifle. if you have a CH friend get him to "loan" you a pet using the friend command. then you can have a high level pet as long as he is on the same planet. pet auto storing can be a problem.
a good pet for that sort of thing is a BE'd cat with light armour.

I'm a Droid Engineer and Rifleman. My Probot is great. It auto heals while it tanks. I send it to attack lairs and then Flush Shot II while they aggro it. Plus if you are grouped it will heal their Droids too. I need to look into getting a Rancor since you can only have 1 droid out at a time.

one other thing... a gurreck can keep up with a speederbike. swoops and av21 will outdistance it. rancors suck for traveling any distance since they are limited to a speed that is about the same as player running speed so even the lowly landspeeder and most mounts will outrun one. i stopped using rancors for PVE when mounts came out. it just became too much of a chore.

As a good pet to tank, I would suggest a razor cat, light armor, around 50-60% kinetic res with about 10k HAM.
A good BE can make you one with CLevel 34-35. So, you would need to have a few skill boxes in the CH tree (don't remember right now how much you would need).

I used a droid beforeI got conceal shot. Mine was an R3 combat rating 600 ham ~4500. Since it had no autorepair i had to repair it between spawns. The LE Repair droid looks like a good tank but you can only have 5 modules in it. I think autorepair is the way to go. A probot takes 5 modules as well and has built in combat ability so unlike the LE you can put 5 autorepair modules in it (LE takes 1 combat 4 autorepair). So the ideal tank droid would be a Probot with good HAM and 5 good autorepair modules (+20 will work). Our droid would only do 1 point of damage but would heal itself 100 pts / 10 sec. Bring lots of Droid Batteries, auto repair drains the droid in 30 minutes. Still repair the droid between spawns if he isnt autorepairing fast enough.
And as mentioned above, have him attack the lair because 1 point of damage to a quenker wont tick him off much and you may draw aggro. 1 point of damage to the lair do the trick just fine.
1 caveat, this only really works at the quenker (intermediate) level. Dont use a droid to tank a night sister

Or a Krayt. Mine actually lasted 10 minutes but then the Krayt noticed it and crunch!
