Thread: Take cover confusion?

I have seen a lot of posts that seemed to suggest that some of us believe that /takecover adds concealment bonuses (i.e. makes us harder to see). I have also seen suggestions that /takecover is broken. Since everything I have read only mentions that /takecover adds defensive bonuses and says nothing about adding to concealment , I see no reason to assume it does add to concealment, and if people are saying it is broken because they are being detected while undercover, that is, as far as I can tell, a misunderstanding of the skill.

That is, /takecover is like ducking behind a log or a rock to make it harder to hit you, not like slipping into somesuper camouflage that makes it harder to see you.

Now, I have to say that I have not seen a great deal of difference between the amount of damage I take under cover as opposed to being out of cover, but that is kind of hard to test since I have no way to determine how much damage I would have taken had I not been under cover. So /takecover could be broken and not be adding the defensive bonuses it should, but if people are assuming it is broken because things still see you, that, I believe, is a misconception over what the skill does.

So that we can clear this up for people, what do the rest of you say?

The defensive bonus for using take cover is not big enough by a long way. Currently I take "insert stupidly high amount" more damage when taking cover compared to running around in circles.

I think what people may be talking about is that when using conceal shot they getseen by a mob's friends even though the mob itself does not notice them.

If this is not what they are talking about they might be saying when you go prone you gain an extra "free" shot, however if you are attacking BAF mobs this free shot is not granted, instead all the mobs except the one you're attacking instantly attack you.

I disagree Seflyn. I think cover is quite useful in PvE. Now I do PvP a lot, so I know that last bit "in PvE" is a huuuuge downer, but still, we can't ask for PvP perfection, that would bring a nerf. Also we've yet to see how taking cover will play its part when +rifle crawl speed is fixed and the devs take a good luck at how our bonuses to taking cover are working (or more appropriately--not working). Also, the time it takes to go prone (the delay is longer than you may think. Next time you're out fighting something simple, try hitting prone, then an attack. You can see how long the delay is.) and then to attempt to take cover, then the delay following that, ugh, a BH has fired his 3 Krayt Pistol Scatter shots by then, and you're done.

I use cover for applying debuffs to a group of NPCsquickly, and surviving the ensuing counterattack. If I were to approach 3 stormtroopers, knelt, and started firing, the combined counterattack barrage would probably kill me nearly instantly. Instead what I do is take cover, fire flurry 2 and flushing 2 to weaken them/knock them on their back, then if I'm taking too much heat is when I stand, heal, and start moving to dodge some.

*shrug* Whatever drops their bars faster than your I guess.

I seen quite a lot of people saying it's good in PvE and I have tried it, but every time I've done it I've felt worse off than running around. Not being able to heal is a major downside for me, and I think you need to keep this in mind. I'm not saying it's of no use at all, I simply think it's not of enough use considering the amount of attention it gets in our skilltrees.
