Thread: Rifle damages, vs Carbines and Pistols

As a Master Rifleman, I am happy with the way our proffesion is set up at the moment. The only seriously powerful shot we have in PvP is the Startle shot. Sadly, this is often overused by the Bounty Hunter profession to gank Jedis. Two or more MBH's with rifles startle shot can take out Jedi with impunity.

Perhaps a reuse timer is in order for Startle Shot. Even though it can be resisted.

Now, on the the real issue of this post.

I have been noticing a rather odd occurance. I use Pistols, Carbines, and, of course, Rifles. My rifles are the hardest hitting of the three, the carbine next, and the pistol last. All three have comperable SAC scores, approximately 90.

Point at hand. When using the exact same shot combos, the Action bar barely moves when using a pistol, moves a little when using a carbines, and takes a big hit when using the rifle. The pistol fires fast, as fast as the carbine. The rifle is slower than the other two. Now, with either the pistol, or the carbine, I can often outdamage other riflemen, with almost no loss of Action.

I should also point out, that my character is a Master Rifleman, Master Ranger. That template leaves only 4 skill points to play with, whichI havereserved for FS skills.

I believe that no profession should be able to pick up and use a weapon type they are unfamiliar with, and use it proficiently. I should be taking a heavier Action loss to the use of carbines and pistols. Even those that are open to any profession. To include those pistols and carbines that are reserved for Riflemen only. (I have seen a carbine, but not a pistol).

An increased inherent range to the Sniper shot is a good idea. Minimum range to Sniper Shot is a good idea. It is hard to place that shot exactly where you want it when in close combat with a rifle.

Critical Shots, and other high damage shots of other professions are a little too powerful. These can be spammed and vastly outdamage any rifle shot that can likewise be spammed. It is rather odd to see a pistoleer standing next a rilefleman, shooting an NPC, the rileman doing approximately 1400 points of damage per hit, to the pistoleer doing approxitely 2000 points of damage. Each using thier profession weapons. The pistoleer's shots are coming off much faster, with almost no loss of Action.

To impliment an accuracy penalty would indeed kill any riflemen/noncombat template. Maybe we should be considering to cap the effective accuracy to 170, or some other number? Something far lower than the 300+ that is possble with certain templates.

I have used rifles for all of my life in the real world. In the military, and out. Rifles are indeed harder to use at point blank than a carbine or pistol. Carbines are easier to use mid ranges. Pistols are easier to use at point blank. The old system of accuracy modifiers was more reasonable. I do not believe we need to go the old system. I do believe there needs to be an inherent consideration for the characteristics of the weapon types, and for the use of them by character not proficient in them.

ok but...have you ever tried having an entire group of rifleman together??

Riflemen are good with other riflemen. Of course our action cost is higher, that is why we have food. To balance the damage issue, we have a 65m range that can go to what, 80??? Pistols are only good at <35m and carbines <50m. We kite a lot better than those other two. I don't think this system needs any changing.

Btw, have you seen +3 rifleman snipershot at the same time ??

oh and:

In the military, and out/Carbines are easier to use mid ranges

I actually don't know what a carbine is....another term for a machine gun or what???

Well, we don't have the only 65m weapons any more. A player wielding a pistol with a 65m range, and then the cyber arms? my my, we have your new snipers boy. Far greater DPS, over the long haul. They dont have to stop spamming shots till long after we need a rest. Yes, even with food, and buffs.

Both carbines and pistols have 65m varients. My real point is, Riflemen are supposed to the hardest hitting, DPS kings of the ranged profession. We do get 2 hard hiiting shots, Concealed Shot, but then the heaviest, Sniper Shot. Neither of which is spammable (a good thing). But wait....

Now for the core of the matter: Take any Master Rifleman with an average quality Master weapon, the T-21. Take a Master Pistoleer and a Master Carbineer, both with average Master weapons, and have everyone shoot untill they run out of action. Add up all the damage. Do you think the Rifleman will come out on top?

I know the Rifleman will loose out, and here is why: I can outdamage -Myself- using a CL 54 carbine or pistol, both withclose to thesame SCA rating as my T-21. I have duplicated this with a CL 54 rifle, the Advanced Laser Rifle, who's SAC rating was identical to the pistol and carbine.

My character's template is Master Ranger/Scout, Master Rifles, Marksman 4004,4 points reserved for Force Sensitive skills, one of which is in Ranged Accuracy. This character's skills with a carbine or pistol are only rudimentary, just the basics given by Novice Marksman, and any general ranged accuracy and speed granted by his skills.

Now, if my character can outdamage himself, using weapons he is not proficient in, what do you think a Master Pistoleer or Carbineer can do? Oh, they can rip 'em up. I respeced to Master Carbines for a day, it was incredible the damage that can be done by one. Was even asked to slow down, the CL 81 Bols were dead before they got to the group.

T-21, 2.36 Speed, 1043 max dam, 94 SAC, 475 dps rating in my character's hands, not a bad rifle. The carbine was an E-11, (if memory serves me), and the pistol is a DL44 XT, both average quality, if a lil high in SAC at 90. Skills used in the comparison for my character were exclusively 'Head Shot, Startle Shot, Aimed Shot' repeated, untill Action forced a stop. I never had to stop with a pistol yet.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, a full group of concealed rifleman would be a dangerous thing indeed....

sniper shot, plus root, plus snares, plus kd, plus legshot and area attacks
