i have found pistols with 316 dps. i was wondering if i was both rifles and pistols, would using my pistols + rifle specials be the best idea? i know it would reduce range but would that be best for damage?

I almost went with this template. I think it has the best defenses of a pure ranged profession. but I finally decided on MRifles and Smuggler. I could't pull away from the specials and the content of the smuggler. as far as damage I noticed even in a group tha I was helping a lot more when using rifle specials with a pistol. and tha is with Smuggler.

I would take, use your pistol specials with rifles over use your rifle specials with pistols.

Though I will also say, Master Rifleman/Pistoleer = Nice

CM's are like nukes. You have them just incase you need them, but as soon as you start using yours the other guys start using theirs and everything goes to hell-PyschoticChipmunk -The First line of the Riflenomican.

coming from a MBH/MP/4xxxrifleman I can tell you that rifles hit harder plain and simple. If you need quick successive shots then by all means use a pistol as they are faster (also faster action drain since your shooting more shots per second).

I carry both with me because there are always situations in which one gun is more suited than another, but more often than not your better off using your rifle (and this is coming from someone who hasn't mastered it).

well the rifles abilities such as adv startle and headshot, aim, etc are nice, i find that more often than not i like to use my rifle because it does more damage and i have the range, so i will often go down on the ground and get off a sniper shot once in a while, which is very helpful for sheer dmg.

There are a number of other things to consider, such as what abilites you'd be using and such. Personally i'm MBH/Mrifles and 90% of the time i can fire my rifle faster than my pistol, however this may not be true for you. the other thing to consider is SAC. i slap on SAC reduction pups onto my rifles and i can fire my specials without running out of action. With a good pistol that is near cap you may be able to do this anyway and hit your pistol with a dmg powerup to suppliment your damage a bit.

i would say that you should use a mix of specials, dont' focus on just one or two. with pistoleer you have stopping shot, intimidate shot, and an arsenal of state effects and the like. dont' exclude these since they can help with damage. Your range will get hurt but in the end you may find that it's just better for you that way. If you're going to pvp vs jedi you probably want to at the very least have your rifle handy so that if you need to stay out of saber throw range you can.

Oh and the other thing, especially if you're going after rifleman specials, forget about dps. in fact, forget there is such a thing on your weapons as dps. it would almost be worth your time to set yoru weapon examine window at one place on your screen, then place masking tape over the dps. It's practically that worthless. why? really on rifles the damage is the big dertermining factor especially when it comes down to attacks such as headshot and snipershot.

take these few examples:

Rifle 1:

100-900dmg

2.0 speed

1.1 modified speed

Rifle 2:

300-900dmg

2.0 speed

1.1 modified speed

Rifle 3:

1-1130 dmg (really exageraged for the example)

7.0 speed

4.0 modded speed

Ok so now in this example rifle #1 will have about 454.5 dps(modified). Rifle #2 will have a miraculous 1090.9 dps (keep in mind these numbers are all made up and very exagerated for the example). Rifle 3 will have a dps of 141.4, due to its speed. ( last i checked the way dps is calculated was ((max dmg+ min dmg)/2)/speed), i used the arbitrary modifed speeds for these calculations) The thing about this is that if you're trying to get offa sniper shot the rifle you will want is not rifle #2 with its unbelievable dps, but rather rifle #3 because of it's max dmg, the stat that (all best testing) indicates the dmg for snipershot. While you may see the dps on rifle #2 and think you're going to score taking that baby out onto the battlefield, you'd be much better off in fact taking rifle 3 for your snipershots and having a second gun handy to quickly switch out because your snipershots will be much less powerful with rifle 2 than with rifle 3.

As a reminder all the stats in this example are made up and have little or no basis in the actual game. They are highly exagerated for the examination of game mechanics.

So really don't look at the dps on your pistols, it's nearly worthless.

Pistols hit faster but not as hard where as a rifle with a PUP applied will hit just as fast but harder. Best thing to do is a nice sliced ALR with a PUP going through Pistol and Rifle Specials. Best ones I found for PVP are root, disarm, int and head.
