Thread: Rifle is a garbage Stand-Alone Profession

The stand alone rifle abilities are rubbish. With the startle shot nerf, its effectiveness is not high at all, and cover, despite the "Cool factor" has never been an effective tool in combat, head shots damage is comparable with pistols body shot and carbineers leg shot.
Sniper shot and advanced aim are the only viable abilities in the entire elite profession.
Seriously, next time you jump into combat, take a look at which abilities your using.
I'll take a bet that the abilities your using the most are:
Underhand Shot
Stopping Shot
Critical Shot
Initimdate Shot
Eye Shot
None of which are even rifle abilities.
Sure, rifleman is awesome...if you steal the abilities from all the other professions.

they didnt nerf the Startle shot line, they fixxed an exploit, if you can only kill something by using the startle shot exploit you best learn how to use the rest of the rifleman shots or start looking for another template to use, no one forced you to chose to master rifleman

Everything by itself is pretty sucky. Like someone else said you're given 250 points for a reason. Pistoleers and smugglers dont do diddly for damage. When was the last time you saw a fencer? Commandos AoEs still dont work 100% correctly. BH has a pretty good time as a stand-alone prof but thats about it. If a single combat prof healer gets the agro they go down pretty fast. I could go on and on. Could riflemen use some lovin? Sure but most other professions could prolly use some too.

I am a new /respec Rifleman. It is my only combat profession and I am liking it alot.
Being able to single pull creatures and npc's with conceal shot is awesome, I can solo content that would not have been possible otherwise.
Then I finish them off with headshot. In a group I do decent damage, sometimes too much
And as far 'stealing abilities' goes, I think you misunderstand the way SWG works, you have 250 skill points for a reason, you know...

If they actually make Kip Up, Dive and Roll shot a little longer(Marksman skills we have to pickup)....It may make rifleman a bit more usefull(those defense mods stack big time)....

The devs themselves have stated no 1 combat class would be able to stand alone. The game is designed to have a hybrid of elite classes.

There are professions out there that many players feel comfortable as their primary profession without dabbling into similiar, supportive ones.
Carbineers and Pistoleers come readily to mind out of the Ranged Professions. They frequently form the base combat for dissimiliar professions, i.e. the nasty Carbineer / Combat Medic template.
Bounty Hunter to a small degree also, but the General Ranged Mods beg getting other ranged professions.
Combat Medic and Doctor are self sufficient professions. A Master Combat Medic doesn't need anything else to function as a Master Combat Medic efficiently. Same thing with Master Doctor.
Commando cannot stand on its own. You NEED General Ranged Mods and other professions' Specials to even function.

but with a single combat skill you are only cl 54 so if you get jumped by a cl 80 you are dead (zip the body bag up). Most combat professions can work as a 1 combat skill but for make benefit you need to be grouped with cl 80's so targets don't immediately kill you. Best Solo combat profession is smuggler. Rifleman is not "uber" solo profession which is what this person is talking aboutbut as a companion profession we are very highly rated. We can solo profession easily but not as well as some others due to low quality or no state effects.

I am a level 54 rifleman with no other combat skills. I have killed lvl 80 people a number of times in one on one combat. Against hardcore PVPers with the right templates solo I dont stand up well, but I PVP on occasion and generally do just fine in larger scale combat. Master Weaponsmith/Master Rifleman/Merchant0002/Artisan4044/FSrangedspeed2/FSrangedaccuracy3 is my exact template atm.

then with your mentality, ALL proffesions are garbage as stand alones. I'd pay lots of good money to any CL 54 riflemen that can solo me as MBH / MPist / Carbs 0440.
