depends on what you are hunting Ubese is great kinetic armor, composite is good all around protection. So if you hunt basically creatures kinetic Ubese might be your best bet (lighter encumbrances and cheaper) Composite if you hunt lots of NPC's that use energy weapons.

Currently the easiest way to play this game is to wear composite armor and get doctor\musician\dancer buffs.

However, I like my Chitin armor suit that I wear unbuffed. Yes I die. Yes, you will die. No I don't think I could solo Nightsisters\Kryats\whatever other uber uglies want to beat on me. I enjoy the challenge and danger of using conceal shot and hoping I'm not agro'd. And I look sexy in my bug suit.

Try it, if you don't like it jump on the composite bandwagon while it is still there. It is fun to feel invincible and I in no way look down on those that use comp armor. It just got boring for me and I found a way to havemore fun.

Padded armor also has good stats and lowish HAM, but I don't like the look of the helmet. It does have a great color pallete if that matters to you.

Some people use Ubese It has higher kinetic resists, but it is higher in HAM than chitin or padded, which makes it harder to use unbuffed.

Edited for gammer (mmm nyquil good!)

Had a very scarey rifleman moment the other night. I'm unbuffed and wearing comp boots, chest, gloves and helmet (I was on dathomir) and I ended up in a situation where I had three nightsister rancors and a half dozen nightsister slaves ... I thought I was a gonner for sure ... except they start fighting each other too. I eventually wiped them all out.

Stim B's, brandy and ahrisa make a huge difference. I normally fire twice than heal in those situations. I've hunted unbuffed and in padded on dant before. its fun

Every now and then I got my buff and go grinding with my comp (not all pieces, just breastplate, helmet, boots and gloves), with Ubese pants...

When I'm not buffed, I usually wear Ubese pants and jacket, comp boots and gloves and of course NO helmet, so I can easily go through my specials (above all conceal shot and head shot3) without worrying... It's fun, and gives some excitement trying to avoid the aggro from nasty beasts...

If you are good and brave enough, you can even go unbuffed to Dantooine and use only conceal and head shot, try it for a little more excitement... and just to see how good can the rifleman profession be...

man i just made 5 suits of padded with enhancers and got it all sliced... ended up with 1 suit of 350 HAM 80% kinetic padded...

Forget about ubese and comp... padded has.... style.
