Thread: HAM cost with rifles question
Focus is important, probably more so than mind regen (Willpower). Having a high focus reduces the mind cost of specials.
Eating and drinking things that increase focus help keep down mind cost. Also, use power ups that reduce mind cost on your weapon.
When all else fails, eat food that gives you mind. These work as a limited mind heal.
DLT20a has low mind usage, but it also has no AP (armor piercing). AP helps immensely in dealing damage. You get damage bonuses for every level of AP you have over the armor level of the target. Also, for every level of armor the target has over your weapon, you get damage penalties, so the higher the AP of the weapon, the more effective it is against armored or unamored targets.

Focus is important because you do not have to recover what you have not lost.
Also, mind buffs from musicians/dancers, foods that buff mind, and spices that boost mind stats will help immensely. If you have species related low mind stats, then these are you best bet.
However, keep in mind (no pun intended) that the DLT20a and Laser are not your only choices. You might want to geta good E11. It is medium AP like the Laser, but while it does not have the high end hitting power of the Laser, it has a higher min damage than the Laser, and it is faster and, most importantly, has lower HAM costs than the Laser. Mine has mind costs at around 40. My Laser mind costsare in the 60s, and I have T21s in the 70s and 80s as well as some over 100 to mind. These are all before reducing mind costs due to Powerups.
The E11 may be an answer for you as a good all around weapon.
That said, there are masters who use the DLT20a as their general weapon. However, the main drawback is that the DLT20a does no armor piercing. So against armored targets, you will be doing a lot less damage than you otherwise would. But I believe the DLT20a mind costs are half that of even the E11, so that is the balance.
E11? OK I'll try it. Realy thats what I was looking for is something in between the damage and ham of the DLT20a and the laser rifles. Laser rifle is also a bit slow for my tastes as well.

You can use power ups to fine tune your weapon. I use Max Dam 33%, Mind 16% power ups with my T21, and Laser Rifles. This brings my dam sliced laser, non-krayt, to 695 max damage, with a ham of about 60.
You could get 33% attack speed power ups on a laser or t21 to bring speed well into the usable range, though once you hit 0004 they become obsolete, due to the speed mods.
I'm having serious trouble finding E11. I believe WS's ignore these for the most part.

It is hard to find E11s, but it is not because WSs ignore them, it is because we tend to ignore them. The E11 is cert'ed at Rifle IV. The Laser at Rifle II.When we get to Rifle IV,we ook at thehigh end stats and thinkthat the E11 just cannot compete because the Laser does so muchmore damage. So we tend to stick with the Laser. Basic economics: no demand = no supply. However, you can get them made. I have a WS I have been dealing with since the start of the game, and he makes themspecial order for me.
With a good damage slice, and a min/max damage powerup, you can get an E11 in the range of 140 - 330 damage, 4.7 speed, 40 to mind. Now, the 330 may not compete with a Laser's high end, but in all other respects, the E11 wins hands down. Faster natural speed, less natural HAM use, and much higer low end damage. And with damage mitigation, if it goes through, the E11 will be affected less than the Laser because the Laser has a much wider damage range than the E11. So it is at least worth having one in your arsenal even if you have to have them made special order.
aside from what everyone else is saying - if you want to be a hardcore rifleman + pvp with it, and don't need Twi'Lek for a rollplaying aspect, and aren't just grinding rifleman for a holo (haha,these are a lot of 'if's'
then i would highly recommend re-rolling a Human, Mon Cal, or Zabrak rifleman toon, due to the upper limit for secondaries.
humans can have up to 1100 in any mind stat, as an example.
Just a heads'up before you get so deep into rifleman that this choice would be a huge burden!

E11s require plumbum iron, which isa rare spawn and almost always has horrible stats. E11s sell very poorly and plumbum would be better used in republic blasters which sell very well.

Actually in all truth, I was novice rifleman quite a while ago, got there using a dlt20a then went decided to go commando and wound up dropping novice rifleman at one point but now that I only need a little more combat XP for master commando, and with the new mitigation system giving commandos melee mitigation, it gives me the opurtunity to leave the masterTKA/ commando idea I was heading for and go back to being able to use my original combat skill. I know that pistoleer helps with the LP but Im going more for the 64m fight capability in PvP and I like the sneaky concealment tactics. Dont know how much of it works since I know all professions have stuff broke in some way.
So in short, Ill probably use a higher HAM rifle when I get to PvP cause it will be just to get some pot shots in at range then switch to my FT(Hopefully there will be other commando weapons worth while by then to where I have a choice) which I have no problem with whatsoever. Its just for grinding that I dont like the high ham cause I waste time for buffs, or recovery and what not. At anyrate, twileks do seem to do best in health cost compared to mind or action.

I use a 510 dmg dlt20a with 25 mind cost.
