I wouldn't say 'useless'- especially if you have +125. But you'll definately be hurting if someone does get into melee range. Either learn to kite like a pro or pick up a melee professionyou canswitch to when the distance between you and your opponent closes. Not too much else you can do.Have plenty of food ready to goand take friends when you can.

If you have 125 stacked melee defense it will help in some situations, but be worthless in others.
In PVE you will notice the creatures miss. I have 125 melee defense and I do notice mid level creatures miss quite a bit, but high end creatures don't miss that often. I did notice something odd this week however. I went through the genosian lab with my master bh friend and he was glass compared to me and my other master rifleman friend with 90 melee defense.
My BH friend got attacked by 1 enhanced kwi, and went down in about 5 hits even though he was wearing composite and was buffed. My rifleman friend however was shooting for 30 seconds at a group of enhaced klikniks Kwi and a droid that I was tanking. He was wearing ubese and after we killed the group I was tanking we noticed that a kwi was biting him in the back. His HAM bars were not moving at all. I switched to rifle and we dropped the little guy without any issues.
There are too many variables here to know why the rifleman was able to stand up to an enhanced kwi while the BH was killed easily, but it may be something somebody will want to test if they have the time. My guess is that the either the melee defense was helping or the onehanded toughness from fencer actually worked even when he was holding a rifle. It could be as simple as the BH's armor was down to 0, but he has been playing a long time and I doubt he would make that mistake.
As for pvp, any master melee has enough accuracy that they will hit you almost 100% of the time even if you have maxed melee defense. This is due to the chance to hit bonus they get when we are holding a rifle.
