I just hit master rifleman and have been running around like a child on christmas hitting everything and more with my Strafe Shot 2 to see how great it is (going alone against 10 rebels in theed wasn't my most glorious moment though). Anyway... if I hit a few targets close by.. all get hit with the AoE. But even as I somtimes hit a chuba with the AoE for 2-3k damage they still don't die. Sometimes they take damge.. but very little.. and sometimes they don't take any at all.

Is the AoE damage (except for what you're aming at) very reduced.. or is there a trick to it?

AE dmg only hits targets that are in combat.. HUGE bug

Yeah, this is by far the most underrated bug out there. It takes two SS2 shots to get an area effect. That's 6 seconds and about 400 mind with 600 focus.

What I usually do with a group is one normal attack, to get everyone attacking me, and THEN start using strafe2.

you should use flushing shot 2 it hits everything but the nest whether it is in combat or not. I wish to my pagan gods it didnt since it outdamages hs3 3 to 1 but it is reduced to unusable because of ae.
