Thread: Question about AoE shots
OK.. Is this the way it's supposed to work.. Just curious here myself. But as I've been playing with AoE shots, Flurry shot 2, and Flushing shot 2, I've started to notice something.
AoE's don't see to actually damage targets that's you haven't directly targeted, or that aren't agro on your group.
Example group of thug types Selmo or Meatlumps don't remember, just sitting around 3-4 of them in a nice group. I make sure the furthest is 60m away, shoot with flurryshot2. Kill the one I targeted, 1 agros on me, when it's HAM lit up it was full. even though I saw number pop over everyone's head. Check the others in the group any they hadn't taken any damage either. One of the full HAM guys was even dizzy.
Fast forward to my trip to Dantooine. Seething Bol lair..Send pet in, draws two agro's, spam flushingshot2, knock one target down and the other's 1/2 on health. Also noticed that hit the lair several times and no damage was actually taken.
Is this normal behavior? Since I've just started playing with AoE shots I was curious. Seems like I'm wasting them if I don't have agros on all my targets..
you're probably doing one thing wrong.
1) hold couple of mobs agro with your pet so they are clustered together.
2) get 60m away from the mob CLOSEST to you
3) spam away while on the spice
see, the AoE seems to make a cone of effect like this
x= you ; p= pet ; m= mob ; - = line of fire
m m
x---------------m p m m m
m m
so, all of the mobs will be hit (up to 8). Note that the damage will create a 'splash' effect and will extend much farther in the direction of your line of sight rather than perpendicular to it.
hope my crappy model helps, but trust me it works.
No see.. If my pet has agro it works fine.. however if we do it this way...
m m
x---------------m m m m
m m
Take the pet out of the equation, it's a yellow mob.. get within range, target the first guy, launch an attack. it'll indicate that it hits everything, both above their head and in the combat spam.. first m drops (the one that I had targeted), but none of the others do.
I'll see if I can get some screen shots so you can see

Correct. That is indeed how it works. AOE shots don't damage anything that isn't targeted and isn't aggro on you. So for social critters, shoot one with regular autofire to get the others aggroed on you, then use Strafe.
I have had it do strange things and gotten yardtrash on me. Attacking Rebel targets and sometimes there are non-aggro mobs among them and they attack me. Not seen it since the patch, but have been in fights and when its over. I have had flewts and nightspiders attacking me.
Worst was when a rebel ran into a group of Fambas and they all attacked me when a AOE went off. Maybe I get bugged once in awhile or have bad luck.
Well as Volsted confirmed above, AOE's won't damage anything that hasn't gone agro on you or your group... Howeverit seems everything else but damage seems to work on everything in the AOE. In my above situation I saw meatlumps walking around Dizzy, but they didn't have any damage, and eventually they all went agro on me.
Doesn't seem right to me.. but /shurg what do I know.. ![]()
