OK, first off, I used to be purely a rifleman/ranger, until I figured out that I can't compete or stay alive. Part of this problem is due to the melee penalty. I have come up with a proposal to change that to a speed penalty, not a damage taken penalty. If anything rifleman shouldn't take more damage than a pitol user, considering you can butt someone with the end of the rifle.I am not pushing for a major change, I am just trying to get this out there. I am not sure if this has been proposed before or not, as I do not have time to troll the entire forum. If it has been suggested, then count me in as a supporter.

iirc it has been proposed some type of melee defense attack.

How ever in my eyes it would be a nice bonus but have a gut feeling that it wouldn't happen. I think it won't happen because *cough* "balance" , its a crazy web the devs have spun.

The recent increase to our melee defense was a move by the devs to offset the 2.5 melee damage penalty somewhat.
This penalty is one of the major disadvantages of the profession, and is there to balance our damage ability. It also applies to commandos using heavy weapons and BH useing LLC. I do not see it going away, but dev statements have indicated it might be reduced.
The best option is to find additional skills to offset the disadvantages of rifle. Everyone has the skill points to do this, it just depends how dedicated to combat you want to be. This is the strength of a skill based system. There are no cookie cutter characters. Each profession has strengths and weaknesses, this is one of ours.
