Thread: Am I the only one that's annoyed by auto-defend?
You're running through the wilderness. You spot a group of criminal Swoopers ahead. You know that they could easily kill you if they all ganged up on you, so you skirt around them. Unfortunately one of them notices and rushes you and fires.
In this situation, would you:
(A) Return fire, thus alerting the entire camp to your presence and getting them all running after you?
or
(B) Keep running?
Hypothetical situation #2:
You're trying to get Combat XP by throwing grenades at the bad guys. But first you hit 'em with a couple of bleeds to soften 'em up, knowing that you won't get any weapon XP from the bleeds. All you have to do is hit 'em once with a grenade and then run around until they die. But you also know that if you de-equip your weapon, so will they, and then they'll close in to melee and kick your ass. So you keep your weapon equipped. They start bleeding and shoot at you.
In this situation, do you:
(A) Return fire, and dilute the Combat XP you'd get (possibly by a large amount, depending on the weapon)?
or
(B) Hold your fire and just hit 'em with the grenade?
The logical answer (at least from my perspective) is (B) in both cases. Apparently things are a little different in the SWG universe.

Found a bit of a way around this problem. Hit the peace button until it shows up next to your name. If the peace symbol is there and someone aggros on you you won't return fire. This is probably a bug but it works. If you do want to attack you'll have to target and attack normally.
Whoa. Cool.
And here I thought that peace symbol next to my name was just a window clean-up bug.
Personally I get fumed by this as well. Attack should be a selected mode only. Another frustration is the Peace button, which does not peace you and keep you that way after you choose it. These are both situations that SOE should seriously look at for reality of play.

(#!) Don't know if this is a stupid suggestion or not, but why not run around with no weapon equipped? Especially the rifle, as if you get jumped 2.5x melee damage buries you ultra fast. If you're not intending on engaging when you are moving from A to B, put the gun away. It's pretty fast to bring it back into your hands.
(#2) I wasn't aware that if you drop your gun, so do they. How odd! Does it matter what weapon you have, as long as you hold one? Maybe then just make a show of holding a large axe to trick them? Dodgy either way!
Hi Guys,
Personally, I just run usually. These guys are not worth alot of combat xp to me, and as a rifleman at my current level, unless I setup for a shot, combat can be real bad.. When I run I carry a pistol (Supposedly there is a 20% speed on running penalty for having rifle-Which I may add, the 20% may or may not be correct, but there is a penalty. Expirament and see if you don't believe). I usually don't have to hit burst run to get away as long as I have not run through the middle of them and they have spawned in (Which does happen sometimes). I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS BEST, this is just what I do.
It is also exploitable in pvp. One overt shoots at person and you auto defend then there group of coverts can all attack you, because you just attacked a group member.
Seen it done a few times, the leets will figure out every exploit.
Hitting the peace button puts the peace symbol next to your bar. When you are attacked, you won't auto-defend. This is the exact tool to solve the exact problem you are having, and it works perfectly.
Also there should be an option for autotargetting anyone who attacks you, and a toggle for this as above.

The animation is different and LOOKS like you're moving slower, but you're not.On flat land, everyone will go at the same speed regardless of weapon type.
