Thread: Novice Rifleman= T-21 certified

Ok, that's fine. It's not the best weapon anyways (for the non-masters).

Here's an idea I just had this morning for a possible new rifle that you would be granted certification for much later in the skill tree than Novice:

  • Possible damage could be something like 800 min.-1200max. damage.

  • The catch: Make the rifle ridiculously slow. Something around 30 speed seems pretty slow to me(more is fine, if neccessary). In addition, the resources to craft the weapon should be very difficult to come across. This would make the weapon very expensive. Last thing, if possible, would be to make it very high complexity such that it would need many, many resources and even maybe requirea few failures before successful completion.

Is this something that seems balanced/feasible? Please post your comments/suggestions/improvement ideas here. I, for one, would like to see more variety to our choice of weapons(even if some are more along the lines of the SG82 )

And I do realize that there are many other issues that need addressing first. The is just an idea for down the road. What do you think?

You do realize that the dps would only be 100 right? If you want the gun to be feasible you would need to bring the speed WAY down.

You're forgetting the speed mods you'll get as you advance through the tree, right?

You know, it's a terrible thing when masters forget how hard it was to get there.

Being less than a master rifleman sucks.

It plain blows. High level riflemen aren't the ones that need the most help sport. Low level ones are.

This is true. Did you read my entire post, however? I stated that other issues need to be addressed first. That is most certainly oneof them.

I cannot agree with you more that Rifleman is tough until you get up high. But, do not assume that I have Mastered ityet I have 4/3/3/3 and find it very enjoyable and not nearly as difflicult as it once was.

I honestly hope to see the Master/Novice balancing issues addressed before more is added to the profession. This is just an idea I had for sometime in the future. /smile

I don't think this is just a problem with Riflemen (though it's the only class I'm really familiar with) - but it feels as if everyone gets their weapon certifications too soon.

Pretty much all weapon certifications come during Marksman (or Brawler, for melee types), with one new one at Novice level of the elite professions. I'd love to see the certifications spread out a bit - put the T21 at Master Rifleman, the Laser Rifle at Novice Rifleman, the Jawa Ion at Rifleman Special Abilities II, and spread the rest out over the rifle boxes in marksman.

This goes for all types of weapons - the scout blaster can be one of the best pistols around, and it's at Pistols II (from memory), and Pistoleers also get their last certification at Novice level in their elite profession.

It could be that more weapons are planned, or elite-elite professions (mmm, give me a whole new tree for just Sniper!) are in the works that will have access to new guns, in which case it'll all work out in the end - there's just no new toys to play with after you reach Novice Rifleman at present, and that feels kinda wrong.

I'm sorry. You can't balance a super-powerful weapon simply by making it cost a lot (using super rare resources and increasing the complexity both accomplish this). This doesn't balance the weapon, it just gives rich people an unbalanced weapon, and forces everyone else to grind out the cash to get the one uber-weapon, at which point they throw all their other weapons in the trash.

So what you have left, in terms of balancing is you have a REALLY powerful gun, but it's REALLY slow... that's it.

To "balance" it, you actually need to give it some negative aspects... the slowness bit is acceptable, but not too interesting. The T-21 is already a super powerful but slow gun, and all you're saying is "make it MORE powerful, and MORE slow." To balance it in an interesting way, you need to give it some negative aspects based on context... in other words, in some situations, it's the best gun. In others, it's not. Like... I dunno... a super powerful water-cooled gun that will burn off durability at an INCREDIBLE rate unless you are standing in shallow water (kinda dumb, but that was just off the top of my head).

Furthermore, by giving the riflemen this gun -- if it is indeed of any use -- it gives us an advantage. This means you need to do MORE balancing... between the classes. Very few, if any (too lazy to double check) of the other classes give weapon certs in anything above the novice box. It sounds like you'd have smooth over a LOT of ruffled feathers before you could get the other classes to swallow the mixed metaphors... I mean to swallow these changes.

They will add new weapons as time will go. Right now they have a lot more important work to do. And whats the point of this gun? At master you get to 3s delay with this weapon and you can fire T21 almost every second, dealing a lot more dmg in my eyes and you dont risk so much, cuz miss is not fatal with T21, with this gun - it will be.
