Thread: Just a thought on game balance...

SWG is critically flawed for this reason:

It is a grouping of systems with Star Wars pasted over it.

I know thats hard to understand at first but hear me out.

Ultima Online (back in the day before they screwed it) was an amazing game. While it wasn't perfectly balanced it was pretty close. The reason it did so well was because it was a simulation of the Ultima universe. Rather than focus on making game systems they focused on accurately representing a world. Hence the Origin slogan of "We Create Worlds".

Star Wars Galaxies practically has nothing to do with Star Wars. The world really doesn't come to life because they really didn't work on it. They made a bunch of flawed game systems and then slapped them all together,

One of these flawed systems is the class-based charater system that allows you totake features from other classes.

They really should have picked either skill based or class based, not a half assed attempt at both.

The differences with each end up being how you balance them out. In a class based system you have to balance out one classes features to another class. This is difficult and in a way flawed because you have to make every class viable when compared to another no matter what. But this just can't work when in reality pistols are far less effective in a combat situation than assault rifles are. This leads to certain classes being dominant during the balancing process and has the effect of people feeling left out and neglected.

In a skill based system you balance the way your game works in relation to the skills. This ends up making characters into specific templates. Rifles are better than SMGs, SMGS are better than Pistols, and practically any heavy weapon is better than small arms. The key is to make each weapon skill viable. You fight wars with rifles... you sneakonto transportswith pistols.

In the end is easier to balance a skill based system than it is a class based. And its **edit**ing impossible to balance a class based system that allows people to steal another classes features. Also, in a skill based system you piss a lot less of your customers off when you make changes.

This system has never been tried before, and the Devs are forging new ground. Remeber, this game hasn't been out but four months. Give it more time and you will see it all work out.

The only way it will work out is if they change the way the game works.... currently they are shuffling numbers.... that NEVER works

man, that just SOUNDS boring. c'mon, we almost have that right now, everyone has got a specific "template" already. (Pistol/BH/CH, or anything with commando) Having it set up to where you are forced down one path and have to do one thing, just because the template wants it that way? might as well go back to everquest (yay! i'm a cleric, guess what i do?) c'mon, having it to where you can snag the skills you want is a whole lot more fun. granted, there will always be a super-template, but for those of us with a specific goal in mind, it turns out fun. personally, i like making things explode, especially in PVP, but i like being self-sufficient and able to make the game on my own. this is my template: Pistol 0-0-4-0, commando 4-4-0-0, squad leader 1-4-0-0, Rifle 4-0-0-0. yay! balance me, i rule. and i pretty much can assure you no one else out there has this template. yes, in a perfect world, rifles are better than pistols, but which would you want to pull out in close quarters? rifles are long distance work, carbines are med distance, with pistols for the run and gun crowd. heavy weps (my personal favorite) are for stationary objects, vehicles, and rebels who are too stupid to move. i am proficient in all but 2 ranged weapons and can even fight with my fists. i have my character, if this were a template style game, i doubt i would have stayed, but it isnt, and dammit, i like it this way.

give it time, maybe you want a cut-and dried way to do things, maybe be able to look at a guide somewhere and tell you: ok, now you are a level 25 scout with this and this skill, you want to get this and this. nah, too boring, i make my own rules here, no one can tell me that one thing is better than another, because as it is right now, there is no super-class, go ahead, find one, and i'll tell you how to beat it.

I don't think you understood what I wrote.

You pretty much told me I was wrong then agreed with what I had to say.
