I pretty much forgot about this since it used to not work, I've been rifle a while, but today I noticed that I was blocking quite a bit of melee and ranged attacks while holding my rifle, I don't know if it has anything to do with me having master pike too but just wondered if anyone else has noticed it seems to work fine now
