Thread: Buying Guns for New Rifleman

I'm just getting ready to pick up Rifleman, and since I've never used a rifle before except to grind Master Marksman, I have no idea what type of guns I need to start this profession. I am primarily a PvE player, and sometimes join NS and/or Krayt-hunting expeditions.

I'm not a newbie, and do have money to spend on decent equipment, so would like to get a good, solid set of rifles to carry me through MR and a bit beyond (I've already got grinding weapons, I'm looking for stuff that will actually be decent quality for playing). I'm not looking to purchase any server-record-breaking multi-million credit weapons at this point, though. I would just like some advice as to what types of guns are the most important to have, and what stats constitute "good" quality for these weapons.

In case any WS or people who know of good weapons vendors are reading this, I play on the Lowca server.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Myself, theweapon I usemost is a sweet laser rifle. I have yet to see what I would call a good T-21 (ie high 400s) onNaritus that didn't have a price tag less that 6 figures, so I stick to buying crates of low cost, high damage laser rifles and praying for good damage slices. My current "good" laser rifle is spd 5.9 & damage sliced to just over 600 damage. It powers up to over 800max, and for what it'll cost me to replace it, I'm not to worried about burning it out.

I also keep a nice acid rifle & a Jawa on me most of the time for those critters that just don't die from energy hits or for PvP.

I do have a nice T-21, but for what it cost me, it spends most of the time hanging on the wall collecting dust. I'll grab that up once in a while for big game hunting, like night sisters.

If your looking for the guns to carry you well beyons Master, weapon speed won't be much of a concern for you, since you'll be speed capped on most any quality rifle.A couple of rifle speed AAs, and you'll be capped on any rifle.

What kind of stats on a T-21 would be decent in the 300-350k range? Like I said, I do have money and don't mind spending it. I just think millions for a gun that will wear out is crazy (at least at my "income" level!). Thanks for the response!

I am new to rifleman myself so the only advice I have to offer is this:

Find a master smuggler to accompany you to the WS. Buy the guns 1 at a time having them slice each. This is better imo than buying crates and taking them to a smuggler. With this method it is very possible to get a set of rifles sliced for speed (to use at submaster level) and damage (for later when you have mastered and gotten the SEAs to cap) There is a very real chance you could end up with a solid T21, Jawa, DXR6-b, Laser, and Spraystick for the fraction of the cost of that single crate of T21s.

Being a smuggler from waaaay back I have mostly used pistols. I assume rifles follows the same logic of carrying a variety of weapons that do different damage types etc..

this is an excellent question and one which i shall now address in the newb rifle faq.

My feelings are that as a new rifleman a speed slice t-21 and a good laser rifle are all you need at this point as a dxr-6 is cert'd above your level and practically nothing that you as a pve player will run up against will be damaged anymore significantly then by either the t-21 (great consistant damage) or the laser rifle (good speed and possibly huge damage). At lower levels speed sliced t-21's and damage sliced lasers are your bread and butter

jawa, sg-82 and most others really don't help that much as most creatures are either a) immune (try to find acold vulnerable creature!) or b) have heavier armor then those weapons can punch through. I like the e11 myself but the laser rifle is generally a better energy rifle.

As for a spraystick - before the weapon switch delay it might have been worth something as you could switch to it and have a vastly improved rate of fire at close range but with the delay it is not worth that much anymore.

For grinding:

Either a speed sliced T21 with a speed powerup, or a speed sliced laser with the same. After master, laser rifles are not useful because the damage range is too high - the consistency of a T21 and the heavy armor piercing make the damage better on all occasions.

After master:

Damage sliced T21 (anything over 500 max dmg after slice before pwp is respectable) - if you don't cap your speed at 97 with SEAs, then use speed powerups or your dps will still be low

Damage sliced DXR6 - about 450 max after slice before pwp is respectable - same, speed pwps if you aren't speed capped, dmg pwps if you are

I honestly can't really recommend any other guns at the moment. Jawas, sg82's, berserkers, and spraysticks all fail to hold up in dps comparisons due to their low armor piercing.

Again, though, can you give some idea of what*is* good speed/damage for a T-21 and Laser rifle? The first post addressed the Laser and gave me something to go on, but still have no idea what sort of ranges I'm aiming for. I'd also be interested in decent stats on the DXR-6. Even if I can't use something now, I'd like to keep my eyes open when shopping vendors. Having really only used pistols in terms of ranged weapons, judging good rifle speeds and damage is proving extremely difficult since they're sooooooo different.

"...can you give some idea of what*is* good speed/damage for a T-21 and Laser rifle?"

Those numbers will vary by the materials available on your server.

I can take ~60k of pocket cash and buy 10 laser rifles @ 5.9spd & 450 or so max damage, or I can buy 2 T-21s in the area of 7.0 & 450. On the other hand, good materials for T-21s (and other Adv blasters for that matter)are few and far between on my server (and I've been looking).

I figure out of 10 guns, I'll get one great slice, 2-3 good ones, and scrap the rest. It's just easier on my bottom line to burn 60k or so for 10 lasers and have a good bet ongetting agood one, than it is to put up 300k for the same odds with the big gun.

Maybe I'm frugal, maybe I'm just cheap, but it works for my game play.

Finding a unslicedT21 with a speed of less 7.3 on Corbantis is a tough proposition. While they might exist, I have never been able to find one. T21s with a speed of 7.3 are quite common though.

Like I said before, a damage sliced T21 with 500 max is a pretty good gun and a damage sliced DXR6 with 450 max after slice is a decent gun.

For crafted, non-krayt T21's, look for at least 400 max damage before slice. For a crafted DXR6, look for at least 350 max damage before slice.

Ah, many thanks! (To all of you!)

Those are base stats, unsliced, yes? I realize that stats are going to vary from server to server, but I'm really just trying to get a general idea, so I have something to go on when shopping. Again, being more familiar with pistols, the speed on rifles in particular just throws me--"I know rifles are slow...but is 9.6 speed *too* slow?" Now I at least can judge whether something is at least within normal range. Thanks again for the help!

Odite, was replying to the previous post when I saw your post on damage ranges. Thanks!
