Thread: My Vision of the Rifleman
This is what i thought the rifleman Would of been before i started playing SWG. My "Vision" still remains the same as im hoping that one day Rifleman will turn into this Vision. (now im a big time PVPer so bare with me)
My Vision of rifleman is that the profession becomes more like the Archer classes of DAOC in particular the Scout of albion. The ability to Hide and Sneak Provide Info on enemy movement and the ability to pick off soft target straglers or loners.
The Scouts had the ability to Go invisible aka stealth which obviously wouldn't work well here. I think the radar/Ctrl M/Auto target block would be sufficent enough of stealth.
Archers had a High damage long "draw" time Crit shot ... which can be compared to our strafe2 although the Archers shot wasn't AOE. I'd Still like to see a "sniper aim"5 second run off and the Precision shots i suggest in another post.
I See riflemen and have always seen riflemen as snipers ... thats what drew me to the class. We should put a bit of "fear" or at least a second thought into someone running Opposite faction missions overt that a sniper might be out there.
I think this would Define our class and give us a Role (which i believe all classes should have defining abilities). Right now i look at the rifleman class and i don't feel special i dont feel like theres any difference between me a pistoleer and a carbineer except for what pool our specials do damage to.
I have built my character to be the Archer type class Master Rifleman(obvious). Scouts had the ability to "slam" a 9 second stun so to get something similar i have taken Pistol melee defense1 or pistol whip. Hunters (midgard archer class) had the ability to charm or call pets so ive also gone CH to give myself this ability.
Im having a blast playing rifleman but like I said I feel we need a Class defining ability to make us complete. Is this it? i sure hope so, that is my Vision.
Thanks for reading ... Comments welcome.
When you hit higher rifleman levels you do good ae damage while standing in the back trying not to get hit. My only complaint is that you need to be master to be really effective, and then you don't need the exp anymore.
I think thats a dream =( I dream the same thing but dont see any of it happening. IMO if the devs dont want us to be snipers then they shouldchange the sniping title to break us of our sniping vision or give us real sniping abilities...
Balance is another issue, if we can one shot our kills with stealth if not in combat thenwhat is our disadvantage? There would ahev to have HUGE penalties for this, so what would you be willing to sacrafice?
Well, I played a hunter in DAoC for 2 years, and my rifleman is better at it and more fun than a Hunter ever was. (yes i am a CH and a swordsman as well)
The issue is not that riflemen are not snipers. I can not see the Devs making a stealth class in SWG. More range and a better accuracy balance would be nice, but riflemen are much more than JUST snipers.
The key to enjoying SWG is a balanced character. If ALL you are is a rifleman, you may not be having alot of fun. There are issues, there are problems, i am not going to beat that dead horse again here. I am going to share a different vision of the rifleman.
We are the single most versitle single combat class outside commando. We have a flexibility few others can come close to. At higher levels we are very group friendly, yet remain one of the better solo classes as well. If you combine rifleman with another skill to complement your playstyle you can become a force to be reckoned with.
You want to specialize in being a sniper? pick up Ranger as well. Their cammo and tracking skills complement us well with conceal shot and surprise shot. (note surprise shot is bugged, and currently only seems to work if you are not in cover)
Want to be a fire support class (machine gunner)? Grab CH and take out 4+ enemies at once solo, or group for alot of additional firepower. The most common remark to me in groups so far has been "leave some for us please". Team with a carbineer for some nice stacked effects. In groups don't concentrate on mind shots, use AOE and the other single target specials for a much better effect.
Combine with a melee class for a very powerful PvP combo. (both TKA and 2H complement rifle very nicely) Their skills and defenses help cover our vulnarabilities, and can complement or head attacks using action HAM as well.
The worst thing we as a class can do it to continually ask for additional powers that will unbalance the game in pursuit of being the ultimate sniper. We need to pursue fixes to our issues. We need to stay vocal on the boards (but not belegerant, if we become perceived as a pack of whiners, we lose our influence) We need to pursue changes that will work in the context of the game as is. WE NEED TO KEEP OUR FLEXABILITY.
There are
sorry about the multiple posts, i must have hit the wrong key.
to conclude: There is more than one vision of the rifleman. We need to accomodate them all.

Stealth was the most stupid thing implemented in daoc. It might be fun for some sickos having their uber stealther with 2 extraaccounts of buffbots. But for someone not having or wanting to run multiple accounts. Making buffs so uber and having character-builds that are completely made of buffs ruined the game for the majority.
with what you said ... Stealth didnt ruin the Game Buffs and Buffbots ruined the game. My Main was an Armsman on Guin so i know the effects of not having stealth. Yes a BuffBottedstealth classwould totally thrash me BUT you give me the same buffs or let me go one on one with a non buffed stealth class and i would destroy them.
Buffbots ruined the game not stealth. Although i dont think Stealth should be Invisiblity like it was there either.
and i understand that there are many visions of what rifleman or any profession ... imsimply stating mine not saying all others are wrong
