Ok.., so here it is..., after all the rumours here and there one hears, I decided to test all the possible choices for myself to see what was working with what and what wasn't.., so, I did these series of tests with a friend and came to the following conclusions..;
Notice that I am master rifles / master Bounty Hunter, and the purpose of these tests was to see if the BH's "advanced critical shot" skill worked with the % critical of a slice.
-
All shots where made using the "Advanced critical shot" skill
First test we made was using a DL44, it had a level 1 critical slice (3%)
On a hit (no critical applied) I would always hit for 914 damage
When critical damage hitted, damage was for 1142
So, using advanced critical strike damage without critical = 914, with critical = 1142
Critical damage was applied 8 times in 24 shots, that's 8 out of 24 that gived 1142 damage each.
-
All shots where made using the "Advanced critical shot" skill
Second test we made was using a weapon with No critical slices made, in this case I used my rifle
On a hit (no critical applied) I would always hit for 1300 damage
When critical damage hitted, damage was for 1615
So, using advanced critical strike damage without critical = 1300, with critical = 1142
But here is the big change :
Only 7 out of 38 shots where critical damage, leaving me to realise that the 3% slice witch was used in the other weapon actualy makes a diference
The numbers show that because of the 3% slice it actualy hitted critical more times per shot, then a weapon with no critical slice
This always using the BH's skill "advanced critical strike"
-
Last test we made was using a weapon with critical strike slice (in this case I toke the DL44 again - level 1 critical slice, 3% critical chance), but without using the BH's skill "advanced critical shot"
I choose to use Ranged shot to test it
After 6 shots, 1 critical hitted, this was positive, though, and now here is the bigest issue : The critical that hitted did not add in damage, so if a normal hit would go for 914 damage, after this critical, the damage remained in 914, instead of going to 1142 as we previously tested.
Conclusion :
The %critical slice alone does not work, it will still give you % to hit critical, but once you do, your damage remains the same, so, it is as if you didn't hit for critical even though you did.
But when using the Bounty Hunter's advanced critical shot skill, if a critical hits the damage is increased as it should.
So, if you are bounty hunter, and you use that skill, worry not for slicing for critical, because as proven, if you use advanced critical shot it will work, the higher % critical slice, the more chance you'll have to get a critical hit, doing the increased damage as it should.
But only if you use the BH's skill.
So far its what I came to the conclusion after the tests
Henceforth I guess Ackehece was right in saying I should slice my heavy lightning rifle for level 3 critical, though seeing as I needed a level 1 in damage, I should go for now level 2 critical and level 1 speed to add to the previous slice.
All feedback on this is appreciated, I cannot backup this theory 100%, because until a developer says it is as such, there is little prove of what is realy going on, but honestly, on how these results came out, I suport this 90% all the way.
Coment, flame as you wish..., I shall do more testing aswell, if I find anything new, I'll be sure to post.
Regards.

Thanks for the testing, I guess my problem is that there is a slice that only helps 1 segement of the population.

Ok, this is on the rifleman forums, I posted this there first because it adressed issues on what I wanted to choose as a slice for my rifle.
But this is more of a smugler issue in the end, so.., I'd recon it would be best to post this here aswell.

It will be fixed. That is whyI recommend it. If you are a BH it I feel is the major slice you should get. If not a BH you can consider other slices but if it ever is fixed it will be a major increase for all professions.

you should get at least the 2% one, however unless you are spamming advanced crit, I think you have to look at the weapon as a whole.

heres a question do criticals only happen with ranged shot and critical shot.. because i never used ranged and i dont have critical shot, and i neve get a critical... not once since the CU came out. Also this was in the post above so i'll ask about it as well... min and max damage.. is there a point? My damage is the same on every shot if i use the same weapon and the same special on the same creature

I dunno, I think that I would rather have greater consistency with a speed or damage slice than an increased % chance for a critical hit, even if the critical slicing added a greater average DPS (and I mean on the average in practice, not as listed in the DPS when examining). But, it is clearly a personal preference sort of issue. In other games I always tend to go for reliable, steady damage over nuking with vulnerable cooldowns, which I suppose makes rifleman a bit of a departure from my normal preferences... But on the other hand, you can play rifleman for either method, there is a lot of flexibility in the system.

As I wrotte, after some consecutive tests, when not using advanced critical shot from bounty hunter, when critical hitted (using the DL44 with level 1 critical slice (3%)), the critical would hit, but the damage would not increase as it should, it only seems to do so when using the BH's skill.
I advice you to try out with a friend a series of shots using your critical sliced weapon, even if its level 1 sliced (3%) it should get you 1 critical hit in 6 shots max.
Hope it helps, regards.

interesting if true.....but 24 shots is really far far too few to draw any meaningful conclusions yet. Get 2400 then come back

He may well be on to something. Right now, BH critical shot is the only time I've EVER scored a critical. This leads me to conclude that thecritical shot skillis the the only time a critical chance even applies. It goes to reason therefore that any criticalmods on your rifle would ALSO apply, but only atthe moment you usecritical shot.
So the real question is, if can only use critical shot once every 3-5 seconds... and therefore about 1 in 5 or so shots... is it worth applying a full critical slice over a full damage or speed slice?
I think a speed slice for BH is not the best idea since it doesnt have any banner shots on a super slow timer (like smugglers have a 30-45 second timer on concussion shot, so speed slicing is very important for them IMHO). Its a better idea to do damage for BH, I think.
So the real question is, is it better to damage slice, or critical slice...
and if your weapon is already damage capped, is it better to fully speed slice, or critical slice with a little speed slice?
With an improved CHANCE to critical about 1 in 5 shots... and only 30% to do the critical when you get the chance, I'm leaning toward the speed slice option.

I have a BH rifleman, and a rifle sliced for 10% crit. chance. Yesterday I scored 3 criticals in a row (KD, crit. shot, headshot). Unfortunately, only crit. shot gets the damage bonus... I hope it's a bug, otherwise I trashed my best rifle with this slice.
