Thread: Rifleman Dabbling?

I'm currently TKM, MHS, and 4400 carbineer (and novice medic) but i'm facing down the fact that carbineer is pretty frelling useless at that level. I'd like to pick up rifleman to be able to stack damage with MHS head hits and to mass aggro with area shots to draw enemies to me (PvE only, of course). I'd get really whacked anyway in melee wielding a rifle, so all I'd be looking for is to stick a bleed and/or mass agro a mob, before pulling a hammer when they close in. With that limited use, would I terribly miss the +20 speed at master? Which two trees should i pick, in that case?

Standard response is that of all the combat professions, riflemen is the worst profession to dabble in.

If you're not getting novice medic, you could do alright with 4404. You'd get the best accuracy mods without master, the best speed without master, you'd get your mindshot2 bleed, and an area attack in flurry2. You'd end up with 102 ranged defense and get ranged damage mitigation 2 out of the deal which wouldn't be bad. You would be missing all of the riflemen state/status defenses and would not get your block mods, but these are fairly inconsequential to a swordsmen. You wouldn't get the +20 speed from master or the +40 accuracy which would definitely affect your ability to use a rifle effectively. So, you could use riflemen to complement your swordsmen skills, but with a rifle equipped, you would be gimped and would show as completely ineffective next to a master riflemen - a speed capped master riflemen would have approx 4 (rough math, but about right) times the dps you could achieve with this build.

I think that if you dont really have to or want to be a rifleman then dont because it is the worst in PvP.

I'm a novice fencer who has already had pretty good results "dabbling" with rifles just in the marksman tree, not even quite novice rifleman yet. I've been pretty happy using my laser rifle on things to do some quick damage before moving in and using my fencer skills. I can't see how it will get anything but better after I get T21 certification and move up at least the tree with speed mods (I might go ahead and master Rifleman though, not sure yet.) Don't even think I'll have a great need for the specials. Now this approach definitely works better on creatures than NPC's (who can shoot back) but as long as I close pretty quickly it's not too big a problem.

Hit 3003 today and it's quite fun and useable, especially with the speed sliced t21's i got off the bazzar. Definitely not sustainable on its own, but it's perfectly adequate as a secondary for the purposes I outlined. I'll hit 4004 and keep it there while I run through my stash of dmg-sliced vk's before dropping tkm for master rifleman.

Ya might hold off until after the "rebalance" to see whats left of Rifleman.... rifles may turn out to be worse than carbines .... and anyway .... ya need a boot pistol to save your bacon for anything less than Master. At 4400 rifles I was still using Marksman Pistols 4 with a scout blaster to finish alot of what I started with the rifle because of slow speed combined with astronomical HAM cost .....a condition SOE seems determined to return us to.
