The last time I played this game was about a year ago. I remember the great newbie melon nerf, how pistoleers could pistolwhip an AT-ST to death and when a Commando couldn't kill a Gnort with a Flamethrower. I remember how packed Endor was when everyone was camping those rabbits that moved really really slow. I was a brave soul, I took the Commando route and I stuck with it, until about the time speeders and mounts where introduced. I lost patience and quit.
I was going to wait til the CU, because it was obvious that Commando's were not going to get fixed til that time and I had no true interest in any other profession. A few times, I was going to surrender and go through the Rifleman tree, back when the T21 was "the" rifle to have. But, I didn't want to go through all that Heavy Weapon XP again when the Commandos were fixed.
Fast forward to now. The CU is out and I have heard some mixed reviews of it, but I figured some of them have been misread as they are coming from people who are used to the old system. So I decided to try it myself. I logged only to amazed that all my characters were still there. I logged onto my Commando and quickly learned, this game has changed so much, I am not sure what I am doing now. Where to level, what armor I should be wearing, ( I can see my role in the CU notes), if my weapons from so far back are still good by current standards or what is a good combo of professions with my Commando. It is like coming into the middle of someone else's game. I have decided to great another combat profession: The Rifleman. I feel starting from scratch, I can re-learn the game and learn what all the new "to-do's" are.
Now, I know the current role of the Rifleman is long range damage dealers but low defense. Much like a archer archetype in current MMOs. I know in the old days, they could do serious Mind damage, but now with the CU, it appears it's just regular health damage. Please correct me if I am wrong. Now, I know this game is more group focused, but can a Rifleman solo if the situation called for it (if not, what profession can solo and be effective in a group as well?)? Also, what is good professions to augment the Rifleman? What kind of armor can we wear? Generally, what is the life of a Rifleman like?
