I think...technically you don't need ranged support on the marksman tree for RM, but is it worth wasting the skillpoints on? Thanks

If you are going to any PvP it's worth it for 2 reasons.

The first is it allows you to a combination attack that is essentially a ghetto ranged KD. To do this you need to dizzy your target with flurryshot, then force him/her to kneeling with supression fire. When they try to get up they have a chance of falling down from the dizzy.

The second reason is because you need it to master marksman. As a master marksman you get an extra +5 to your riflespeed. It doesn't sound like much but it more then double your speed with most rifles.

I only keep Ranged Support 1. As a Master Rifle/Doc this allows me just enough extra skill points to pickup Novice Scout or Artisian when I need to so I can collect my resources for packs.

For PvP I have not noticed much of a problem. I am also now able to pick up Novice Brawler to make Warcry and Intimidate available to me.

When you have a 25k ham nightsister bearing down on you, you will be glad you have suppresion fire.

All the other posts are correct on why it is nice to have Ranged Support. They left out that /Aim and /Warningshot are also in that branch. But your question was whether it was necessary. SuppressionFire and the other things in the tree are indeed nice to have, but honestly, they are not necessary.

For the longest time, I had Ranged Support IV and Master Scout (in addition to Master Rifleman). When I added Master Swordsman and Master Brawler for melee backup, I had to drop both of those (to keep Novice Medic). When I got tired of getting poisoned and diseased in PvP (or PvE for that matter), I picked up Master Doc, dropping the melee. That left me with a choice of Going Ranged Support IV or picking Scout (plus Explore I) back up. While I would like to have had /SuppressionFire back, I really missed the terrain negotiation and the ability to harvest animals (now necessary for medical crafting). Therefore, it was not worth the 14 points to get /SuppressionFire because that would mean giving up both those from Scout. So I took the Scout with Explore I option.

It would be nice to KD someone with SuppressionFire and a Dizzy, but since the KD on posture change only works if the posture change is voluntary, since the posture change is on a 30 second timer, and since it can be resisted, I do not think it is worth the 14 points just to pick that up. So, no, it is not necessary, just nice to have.

I personally wasn't getting a lot of value from it and dropped it in order to be able to pick up extra status defenses. The ranged kd is very difficult to stick and it requires a voluntary posture up from your opponent. The extra defenses are nice if you don't have another master combat profession, but pretty much any other master combat profession is going to max your ranged defenses. The +5 extra speed from master marksmen can be made up with SEAs, so I don't see the need for spending the extra 48 skill pointsunless you're strapped for cash. My $.02.

If you don't already have it, and you're going to be pvping alot, I'd suggest getting novice brawler for intimidation and warcry.

I used to be CM/Rifleman and could never really get the ghetto KD to work very often. Most of the time I spent ages trying to get the dizzy to stick while my opponent was wailing on me.

At the moment I'm MD/Rifleman with novice brawler and I'm finding intimidation makes a HUGE difference, I don't miss the ranged support tree at all.
