It depends on how you want to PvP. As a rifleman I chose to stick with Rifles for PvP, that means not letting them close with you, or trying to get out of range if they do. Any melee stacker profession will kick your butt melee if you chose a mixed range/melee profession.
For a defensive melee profession, basically a ranged stacker profession, I chose Master Rifles. Fencer 4440, Pike 0030 (for the block and the state defenses), Pistol 0040 and novice medic for the cleanup heals.
I find the state defenses keep me off my back most of the times, and that is very, very important.

I knew I liked rifles from day 1, but now i can really see this is where its at. However, already starting to look ahead to pvp. I was thinking of doing mtk next so that i can stay with the mind pool attack. Is this the way to go, rifles first few attacks, then switch to tk when they close me. Are there any other melee profs that offer mind pool attacks?

swordsmen pwns tka with mind hits.
but tka/rilfe is a stronger combo than swords/rifle.
