Thread: bummed about becoming a rifleman, please help.
I have played the game for a month.... I usually do that with the free account time before I decide on a profession when playing online. I must admit I have gotten very fond of the game. However, I thought of a character based on what I would like to roleplay. I want a master Ranger/ Master Rifleman character. But in reading the two forums, it sounds like a really bad idea. Between this forum complaining about Rangers being broken, and the rifleman forum complainig that its a broken profession I dont see how I could be sucessfull.
I picture a snipper character able to devistate the enemy from range without being seen. It doesnt look possible. As soon as my "snipper" shoots all heck breaks loose and runs full tilt at him. And the combo would have no close range combat ability. so in a profession combo where I should rarely be seen and difficult to find and when found hard to hit.... It appears I am one ofthe most vurnerable characters. The ultimate survivalist always running for his life.
So why should I even try to become a Master Ranger / Master Rifleman? Because quite frankly, I really want too..... But I cannot justify it logically. Please help.
PVE we are ok, you just have to keep your range. Use the /takecover then /concealshot if you want to solo with out getting attacked. The mobs have to be by themself or non-social and it does take longer to kill them. Not a ranger myself, but their traps should keep monsters off of you. Also there camps are really cool.
We do have a very hard time compared to other classes because of the 2.5 damage mod and warping critters. I keep a pet up all the time even a cl15 pet is very helpful in staying alive, I let it die if things get hairy and beat feet.
PVP rifleman are some of the best at master from what I read. Not there myself, but we have serious issues before then. Being a rifleman is tough, but it gets better the more skills you get. Plus you get to be rather unique, since there are not alot of us.
We suffer many penalties and everything you can do as a rifleman can be done better with another class.
Some will suggest that master riflemen are one of the best. Not so. As a master rifleman, if you have good tactics (better then your target), you will be ok. Not good, not great, but, ok.
Right now, hands down, taking commando flame thrower/heavy weapons is the best. This leaves you a lot of skills points to get pistol skills (if you are worried about accuracy), healing, ch, or even master rifleman (although once you pick up a flamethrower, you will likely put your rifle in the bank).
I, and many others, had hoped we would see changes to the rifleman profession to help distingish us, but, does not look like anything positive is coming to our profession. I do not wish to discourage you, but, you must be realistic. Being a rifleman is not going to make you competitive. It is like bowling with a square ball while the rest of the world uses a round one.

Are you talking about versus other Masters? If so, isn't that exactly how it should be?
Ygu
I say stick with it.
1) If your a ranger and you master Tracking you can track Overts of another faction that you know and lynch em. Or you could try to solo them if you think you can take em, but where's the fun in that? Might want to make an enemies list, I think it would be way cool.
2) I play alot of other characters and as a Rifleman even though I have a rough road when I complete a skill box I feel like I did something, were as other professions it's just soo easy.
3) Like it was stated we do get conceal shot, though it's slow you do feel like a sniper while using it.
Those are my reasons why you should stick with the hard road.
