Is it necessary to /takecover before using Conceal Shot? I've heard contradicting statements about this.

nope

i have yet to see a real use for /takecover

i actually have a spam macro for using conceal shot to clear the parents from around a baby i want to tame. conceal is also VERY good for doing faction missions. rebel terrorists drop like flies.

normally i just stand at about 60 meters and spam it on one target.

"i have yet to see a real use for /takecover"

The descriptions of the skills certainly are misleading, making many of us think you must be concealed (under cover) to use /concealshot. Though this is not so, being under cover does provide defensive bonuses in ranged combat. These bonuses apparently are not noticeable, but according to the TC update lists, they're working on raising the /takecover defensive bonuses so that it will provide a higher level of protection in ranged combat.

the reason i dont think it is useful is because it often doesnt take on the first go round. and you still only get 2-3 shots off before the target comes for you. if you dont start to get up immediately and instead shoot a bit more the target will be on you and you will be prone and taking massive damage and still have to either tumble to get up which will prevent any further specials for a short time or you die.

they could double or quadruple the current bonus to defense and cover would still be useless because one cannot fire from the prone position while a target is in melee range, and they removed the crawl speed bonus which was one of the few perks that made going prone over a crouch or upright stance worthwhile.

crouching is the best combination of regen rate and accuracy. prone has the same regen rate as standing.

thats why i think that cover is useless
