Ive heard before that melee defense doesn't matter if you have a ranged weapon equipped, anyone know anything about this?

I know melee mitigation only works when wielding a melee weapon...never heard anything about melee defense working that way. I would assume you don't need a melee weapon for melee defense to work...seeing as how most if not all ranged professions have melee defense somewhere in the build.
Side note...Master dancer gives you melee and ranged defense

If I recall correctly, your attacker gets a bonus to hit you if you are holding a rifle. I believe this was the compromise for the 2.5x damage thing (which is long gone - whew!). The end result is that whatever your melee defense, you're an easy target to hit while holding a rifle.
I recall that with only master rifles, I was getting hit constantly when things went badly and I ended up in melee. I haven't performed any tests since going rifles/tk, since I switch weapons when things go badly and I end up in melee, but I suspect that I'd still present an easy target.
If I get the sudden urge to take a beating for science,I may look into the matter. But for now, I think that racking up melee defense to complement master rifles would be a waste of skill points.

Getting general melee defense will help and it doesn't matter what weapon you are holding in your hand. Thats one of the basics of defense stacking. Mitigation is a different thing and pertains to the generic weapon you hold (must be melee for melee mitigation or a ranged weapon for range mitigation). Currently we do have a "to hit" modifier on us (which is the dumbest thing to be put in this game, as if melee dont already have an easy enough time) so it cancels out our current general defenses vs. melee.
Stacking more melee defense whether from other professions or FS skills will always be a help but not as much as we'd hope for.
