Can you hunt with just rifleman?

Given the melee tendency of most creatures can you successfully hunt creatures with just rifle? That is with no tanks like pets using just the hiding skills of the rifleman? Or is rifle primarily useful against ranged NPC's and PvP?

You can hunt with just your rifle, provided you have some scout skill to /maskscent on creatures. With this skill you can usually get 3-4 shots off on "looks like instant death" PvE's without being detected, and even more shots off on the weaker creatures.

Alternatively, you can add some pistol to your template and you gain the warning shot ability which is great for halting charging creatures in their tracks, and even making them retreat back to rifle range.

I've solo hunted some pretty big baddies with just a rifle and pistol, no armour, and no buffs. Of course... I've been incapped quite a few times, and DB'd a few times less, but it's very satisfying to get the big monster all on your own without tanking, and well worth the incaps and DB's.

Depends on if you want to Master Rifle or just dabble.

Master Rifleman is one of the most powerful PvE combat classes in the game due to concealshot, its possible to solo almost anything. A Master Rifle can solo Night sister elders, Rancors & Krayts although it does take an AWFUL long time (almost an hour for a Krayt).

All you have to do is get a nice shooting position (60m out, no critters near to you and with themob settled), load up with brandy & Ahrisa (a food thatbuffs focus) and spam conceal shot until the critter is dead. They will locate you now & again (due to bleeding caused by a large number of conceal shots) but its only 3-4 times for a big (300k HAM+) critter. Just have your speeder out & ready and when you see a bleed you run away, and come back afterthe bleed hasgone.

The only thing that Riflemen are weak against is alot of high HAM mobs in a place where you cant get any distance (ie Death Watch Bunker, Corvette, etc) in that sort of situation you will need to be grouped with Melee combat classes to tank for you, as Riflemen have no 360 Degree specials (like the melee combat classes) so if a Rifleman gets 'swarmed' its over.

This is one of the reasons whyalot of other combat classes wants Riflemen nerfed hard in the combat rebalance.

As a speed-capped master riflemen, you can hunt 90% of MOBs in this game with no conceal or tactic at all - just plain firing away with your machine gun, err I mean T21, at a lair and letting the cone kill the MOBs as they rush at you. This goes for most anything graul maulers, voritors, rancors, gurks, etc. For larger MOBs such as krayts, kimoglias, super battle droids etc you can try to use concealshot or you'll want to group.

Are you talking just plain firing or using any special shot?

I'm Novice Rifleman trying to level up to Master, so any tips would be welcome.

Davy, I'm pretty sure he's talking about using strafe shot 2. You only get it at master. For leveling to master rifleman I would say just hunt with somebody until you get to sniping IV, then you could solo huurton huntresses or something...

I believe the Cone effect he is referring to is the Master Ability Strafe Shot 2. Conceal shot works, but like people have said its too damn slow. I blast them with Mindshot2, Headshot3 until they get close, then Intimidate/Headhit2 till dead. I can take down a Rancor in maybe 30 seconds when all goes well.

Man I can't wait for the Combat Balance...

I rely heavily upon using a couple flushing2 shots to stick a stun (which reduces defenses) and then strafe2 when doing reg PVE. The attack is a cone that will hit anything attacking you within the 64 meter range in the cone in front of you. MOBs do make it past without getting hit and then you have to actually target them, but for the most part you hit and kill everything between you and the lair you attack without a problem.

flurryshot2, flushingshot2, and startleshot2 are also cone AOE (Area of Effect) shots. any of those work, though strafeshot2 has the highest damage multiplier.

omg.... im 'new' to the game, rifleman is my 4th elite proffession, im 'new' to rifleman, 4-1-4-4, but only been playing as rifleman over past week, well, i started rifleman on 'naffs, pain in the ass to kill one at a time, i thought headshot3 was gona be the ultimate shot to power up through rifleman.... so setabout gettin 2-0-0-x i was wrong, nexti heard that flushingshot2 pwns... so i head for 2-0-3-x, do naffs again, still only making 60-100k xp per hour, like **edit**?? rifleman gona take ages to complete, btw, to use these shots usually have warning shot the 'naffs to tire them out to pick em off while they slowly walk towards you.
my final choice of getting xp, finding mobs that give 1/2 decent xp + go down quickly, quenkers, not only that i got buffed up + 70% kinetic ubese armour then went out into the wildeness to kill these critters with a T21 + the ultimate Riflemans shot...... pointblank1 (which for all of you master riflemen can be found in the Novice Marksmen box), just goto the lair, and spam the fook outa it with pointblank1, make sure u got brandy + anything else to help with the mind.

pointblank1 : allows the firer to fire his weapon without the usual penalties for range. therefore a T21 can be used semi effectivly at point blank range spamming 700damage (random HAM however) shots into multiple swaming monsters. however rifles sux at damaging lairs so i used fencer to smack the lair until spawns came out.

this is a n00b skill and will allow you to power yor way thru rifleman with ease. sorry if i broke any secrets about the rifleman proffession.

I guess if your backup skills include swordsmen, tka, pikemen, or fencer? Spell weavers and protectors are 100% resistant to all riflemen damage types. If you can't do blast or kinetic damage, you cannot kill either.

hmm.. well then somehting is wrong here

because whenever i hunt with my buddies me (as rifleman/doc) take out the protectors while the melee take out the spell weavers. maybe they have low resist to acid? cause thats the only other type of damage i can do.

*edit*

well i am mistaken somehow cause i would have sworn ive killed lots of protectors...

oh well i checked out their resist on allkhazam and they do have 100 resist to everything except blast/kinetic/restraint...

sorry for the confusion

Pretty sure, although this is from memory:

NS Riflemen can kill: Initiates, Outcasts, Rangers, Sentries, Rancor Tamers, Sentinals, & Elders.

100% resistant to energy, stun, acid, cold, heat: Protectors and Spell Weavers.

I'll double check tonight. I may be going about things wrong also - hehe, could have been switching to a sword for protectors unnecessarily - wouldn't be the first time.
