Thisforum is the first place Ive heard of a "rifle-defense" penalty but it does make some sense to why Ive taken more damage than normal.

I need to ask questions in this thread though:

1. What is the exact penalty? Through hearsay, Ivenarrowed the results down to 3.5 times for rifles, 2.5 for carbines, and 1.5 for pistols? I have no idea if these values are even correct.

2. Is this a melee only penalty? Meaning thatdoes this penalty appliesagainst receivedblaster shots as well?

3. Where did you find this information? I bet 90% of the players have no idea unless this info is readily available somewhere that I haven't looked...

After my crafting professions I have only enough pts to do 2 trees of one elite combat profession and rifleman is looking like the ideal choice for me if I could get some questions straightened out. Thanks.

Conflicting answers here, I don't see any dev posts on search so this may be the best you can get.

This penalty occurs when your attacker is "in melee range" so... yes, this applies to melee.

Right, but you basically have no chance to hit at point-blank unless you're kneeling. Since you're at point-blank, I assume you've decided you can finish your target with one more mindshot so it shouldn't be too bad.

If you can't finish them off with one more, you should already be running!

Despite the urban myths constantly bantered about on this board, the damage modifier for holding a ranged weapon in a melee fight is:

- 2x for holding a rifle

- 1.5x for holding a carbine

-1x (i.e no penalty)for holding a pistol

And yes, if it's going to take more than a single Headshot to finish the target off and you don't have a Mindshot already going, run for it.

Err, I meant headshot. Not mindshot.

Isn't there a double whammy here? A penalty for rifle in addition to a penalty if you are kneeling or prone?
