Thread: Ranger Riflemen a Better match made in heaven.
All I lack is some more ^%$^#@ camping exp and I can get Master Scout and ---- the way it's taking me so long to get camping exp --- I may have enough scouting exp to jump right into Novice Ranger. I was initially interested in making the cool, BIG camps but considering the material requirements I've heard and the inability to repel aggressive creatures and the mediocre camping xp improvements I may not bother. I'm certainly not looking forward to earning MORE camping exp in the Ranger tree.
The wayfaring line, however, has potential merit for Riflemen / snipers. At Scout Explore-IV my mask scent / camo / whatever does -okay-in that I have run through aggro things without getting eaten (usually when they just -appear- in front of and around me while I'm running)....
If I find that, even with Wayfaring, I'm getting seen all the time and my movement isn't NOTICABLY faster across the board, then I may drop Ranger entirely (and sell back all my Scout Trapping and possibly Hunting and some Camping skills).....
I have little interest in crawling faster (which is why I won't bother getting Sneak from the Rifleman's Concealment line).... if I need to crawl faster for some reason, I should probably just stand up and -move-. Still, being able to run up mountainsides faster would be nice. Of course... hm... now that I say that... seems like I read that Terrain Nav from 50 - 100 is pretty much just crawl speed increases. Hmm. Ranger may not be worth anything to me except for the Camo.... which I have my doubts about...
As it stands now, the whole Ranger tree is pretty much useless except for the +10 melee and +10 range defense you get at the very end.
Here's something else to consider (as if you didn't have enough). At Master Ranger one of the best benefits received is the +10 Ranged Defense and the +10 Melee Defense. That may not sound like it's alot until you start to add up what you would be getting otherwise. Until that point, assuming your climbing the Ranger/Rifleman tree skills, you can get up to a cumulative +21 Ranged Defense and +22 Melee Defense. So we're not talking hours and hours of extra work just to get a +10 out of a pool of 100, which isn't bad but 90% vs 100% is still good enough.Instead, here weadd a +10 to EACH for Master Ranger and you've now increased your defense a full 33% !!.
Is it worth all the trapping and camping needed? I don't know, that's likely a personal decision. But as I said, it's something worth considering.

well I have to agree that the ranger profession would give very nice bonuses to the sniper. actually at first glance it might be the most complementaryone, BUT you better pray nothing makes it closer that 15m. I would take the points to work pistols or 2handed weapon combat. Actually with a base in 2handed weapon combat for close range, a rifleman/ranger can really be a great PC and a ton of fun.

They could give me a free Jedi slot and I doubt I'd go to Master Ranger.
Well, okay, I lie. ![]()
But it would take something that good. A mere +10 ranged and melee defense won't make up for all the skill points spent on yet MORE trapping (which I've heard don't work at -all-) and camping. Scouting exp is super-easy to get. I'm not yet Master Scout and I almost have enough Scouting exp to jump straight to Wayfaring I.... stupid camping exp....
With the way MaskScent works now... and I can't even FIND the "conceal" ability... I'm not really sure Camouflage is worth the 11 skill points to get Wayfaring I (20pts total to get Wayfaring IV). From what I've read, Camouflage only affects those two abilities (mask scent and conceal). It doesn't have any instrinsic value itself. Mask Scent is great, when it works. Problem is, it doesn't work as often as I'd like and is broken by chubas, fercrissakes.
I haven't done any kind of study of it, but it -seems- like I have an easier time against animals than I do against NPCs. Well, melee NPCs. Shooter-NPCs are just about the easiest, since I can send my Humbaba to step on them and keep them vertical while I ping them from under cover. Animals, I have my + bonuses against, and my traps work. Melee NPCs, though. Ouch.
Still, when all is said and done, I'm not sure the few little enhancements to existing abilities are worth the skill point investment. Rifleman's Sniper line, I get MindShot2, HeadShot3... those are -good- things... Conceal Shot from the Concealment line... new ability, gooood.

Eye shot??? I think you're a little confused. Eye shot is a BH pistol move that does mind damage.
not confused. when he said "better match" in the subject, I'm assuming he was referring to the BH/rifleman combo thread where eye shot was mentioned.
