You should say what the rest of your planned template is so we can give you the best advice possible. Regardless of what you're planning though, Rifleman isn't worth it if you get just one line. You really need them all. The key is the +20 speed at Master. Even a 4/4/4/4 Rifleman is pretty weak in PvP terms.

Depends on your template and what you want to do. Honestly though Rifleman is different than many of the combat professions. Going up just one branch isn't going to help much. Rifleman is really a profession you have to Master if you are planning on using it on a consistant basis.
Here is how it basically breaks down. Sniping will give you accuracy and the Mind pool shots. However you will be firing rather slowly.
Concealment. You get the ranged mitigation here. Also ConcealShot. But this branch is mostly empty.
Counter-Sniping will give you some AoE attacks starting in the third box. You also get the DXR-6b cert from this branch.
Rifle Abilities will give you speed but not the accuracy. You will also get the cert for Berserker rifle here.

Like ealier stated, it depends on your play style/template. If you are also a swordsman, I would believe the sniping line would be best: hit thier mind for 3k per shot is NOT bad. And if you have plenty of money to spend, buy some good speed tapes to make up for the abilities tree. If you are a fencer, I might reccommend the couter-sniping line to help add to your defenses. If you are a TKA, you are a god already and get away from here, lol!Carbineer, and anything else is up to you and how you like to play- up close or far away, with status mods or brute force, tactics or non at all? Anyways, if this helps good, and if ya need anymore help just post your template here and I'm sure we can help ya out

One line if rifle is going to be almost useless no matter which one you choose.
Short answer, pick a different profession. If you're absolutely dead set on doing it anyway, I'd say probably 0004 and use headshot2. If you have enough +speed to reach speed cap for hs2, it's not that horrible I guess. Play with the speed formula to determine how much +speed you'd need for the rifles you plan on using. Without the +speed, don't even bother considering it.
Going up any other line will not work, you'd fire too slow to do any decent damage.

I do PvE and like the sniper branch.
I have Sniper II so far..
-Hit once w/ Mind Bender (mind bleed)
-Stop Firing pull back..creature will follow to attack
-Send in my Tusk Cat
-Mind Shot 3 until dead.
I was doing Pistoleer (not bad) but I think moving to Rifle fits my play style more.
Good Hunting

Having been a master carb till recently I cannot recommend dabbling. Maybe not getting the master box (only adds +25 to accuracy) but aside from that...
BH can make use of carbine in dabbling because they can actually cap the speed, carbineers cannot. It is also true that you can get most of the working specials pretty early (burst shot 2, charge shot), but they will not hit fast or accuractely.
The most useful single line for a dabbler is the counterinsurgency line for the counter attacks.
To be offensive though you need a lot more boxes.
If you want more opinions though you should try the carb forums but I think you find that neither carbine, nor rifle suffer dabblers well.
It sounds like you are CH, what else do you have that you do not want to master a ranged profession? MCH+Rifle is pretty useful, at least it is working for me until I master rifle and drop MCH.
