Actually you don't even need to hit ESC, which also clears your target. If you hear the thunk or see the red ring, just hit the special again, or any other special. It will immediately cancel the windup and do whatever you said to.
At least once tonight I just hit "/cover" again after every ka-thunk until the yellow bar made it all the way. No ESC, no re-targeting, just vvvvvvv-thunk! vvvvvvvvvvv-thunk! vvvvvvvvvvvv-cover!

This may add to the the sniper shot bug discussion. I was hunting near a house out in the open. When I went prone and tried to shoot some banthas with sniper shot, it failed every time. I then thought about the flat terrain idea. I then crawled up the ramp to the front door platform of the house that was nearby. This is the flat area just in front of door. I tried sniper shot and it worked. Tried a couple of times and it worked.
I believe the problem is terrain based.

So far in my testing, stance does absolutely nothing.
Prone, kneeling, standing, running like a little girl, I get the same exact accuracy and damage.
Also, found an "issue" last night, that isn't specifically rifles-related but I'll add it here too...
If you pull a mob too far from its lair, it changes its state to "retreat" and instantly strips itself of all debuffs/dots, and goes into insta-regen mode, all shots on it are ignored, until it gets back to its lair.
Stance and movement only effect to-hit chances now. Be careful when you say accuracy, your accuracy < target defense will affect to-hit rates, but most of the time you will be accuracy > defense, when this is the case, the extra accuracy affects damage.
