You can open your first shots and all other shots after with range shot...... It doesn't out damage the other professions but can widdle away at the target and when the target's health is down to something where you can use your high damage special, that's when you use it. This way you won't have to draw the agro and you save your armor from needing repairs every week.

im master rifles, and when i go out with my usual guild hunt (to necrosis/krayts etc..) our group tank manages to hold agro well
i think its just a matter of the group all knowing their roll, and how the others in the group fight and this only comes with practice fighting together.
our tank is normally either a fully templated, master defneder jedi, who uses a jedi skill to keep agro (not 100% up on jedi skills, is it 'dominate' or something like that)
or our other tank is master swords/master pikes, who keeps the mob agro using taunt pretty much constantly, adding intimidate and states when he can (he also uses a very high damage PH, that has a very high SAC so doesnt hit often with it unless he has to)
i use a near-damage capped T21 most of the time. and if i use the highest damage shot i can (prone/aim/sniper shot) the mob will sometimes run for me, but our tank usually manages to pull it back before it gets close.
But, when i fight in groups of people i dont normally fight with,i do tend to pull far to much agro unless i use a lesser weapon and lesser moves.
