Thread: OMG! Real deal sniper rifle!
Their snipers pretty much had the same feedback as the article above mentioned (i.e. the scope problem). The snipers loved the range and damage capability of the .50 cal based rifles. One Sniper told a story of how he was able to stop an ambush of an American convoy. Two insurgents were sitting on a water tower, armed with RPGs, waiting for the convoy to approach. The Sniper spotted them and shot one at the stomach. His upper body for all intents and purposes, just "fell off" and forward out of the tower. His buddy naturally freaks out.
The .50 Cal based Sniper Rifles won't replace standard ones, but these things are being fielded alot more by NATO / Western militaries.

WTH???
aw cmon, people on Earth, a planet in which does not have a starship for every rich guy, a planet in which aliens are practically unseen, a planet in which people are actually afraid of dying, a planet....which have 2km rifles. How did they beat us in THAT?
lol j/k.
If you play WWII online you can hit for about 1/2mk with iron sights. They didnt have sniper rifles last time I checked but 1/2km is still much further than 64m.
Hitting a target at 500-600m is very doable with a battle rifle's iron sights. I know I can do it very easily. I've done it with my friend's FAL and another friend's M1 Garand (30-06), and another's M14... all with only iron sights. Going out to 800m was fun & easy. We also tried another guy's Mosin-Nagant.
Too bad the ammunition went too quickly as well as our money.
But it was a fun day!
The Military can ISSUE weapons, stuff oftenly not accessable to the civillian market.
Looks a lot like the Barrett M82A1 (which in and of itself is incredible). .50 BMG is the caliber and it is designed for light armor piercing (yeah it is used for other things) from extreme long ranges. EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) units also use them to blow up UXOs (unexploded ordinance) from safe distances (I had to clarify from the article's mistake on their acronyms).
If you really like the rifle and have about $1200-$1500 to spend, Armalite makes a bolt action version of it called the AR-50 which is available through most local gun stores (granted that you live in a state that doesn't have a ban on them). They kick like 12 guage buck shot, and need one heck of a backstop (these things are accurate to close to a mile and will carry much further), not to mention the ammunition is very expensive.
Yes the6 minute angle of accuracy sounds about right, especially out of a semi-auto like that. These are most effective in terms of cost to be employed against equipment and "material" assets as compared to personnel targets anyway. That is why it won't replace the standard 7.62mm Sniper Rifle for standard sniping (with a 1/4 minute angle of accuracy from the bolt action they are hard to beat).
As for the game's concern, we are talkingabout shoot energy (lasers to be generic about it). They should effectively be more accurate than any projectile weapon out there and for potentially longer ranges. Light (aka laser)is notaffected by gravity, wind, rain, or friction. However, dependent upon the energy put into it, it could have a much shorter, or a much longer range (as it'senergy will deplete over time). That is of course the "non-game mechanic" way of explaining it...lol. The game mechanic is simply put. If riflemen have too much of a range advantage, they will be unbeatable.
They also failed to mention that Gunny Hathcock's record shot was made through rain.

And that he did his shot WITHOUT a Rifle.
A scope mounted on a M2 .50 Caliber machine gun!
the ammo used by the canadian sniper team wasnt even match grade.
they ran out of ammo because of targets of opourtunity and had to send a team member to an american 240B team to get standard ammo.
they used the cheapest 7.62 ammo in our inventory to make the longest shot in history by a rifle.
pretty cool, actually meat the team that did the shot.
Khandahar rules!!!!!!!!!!
wow everyone here knows a lot about the military and their weapons.
Guess i should start studying in that field...too bad they don't teach that in middle school![]()
An average combat engagement starts at 200 meters with infantry (Where people are about this big:Iand 1500 meters with support vehicals (tanks).
(Not statistical information just an educated guess)
