Personally, I've outdamaged everyone in every group I've been in since the CU. This includes full template jedi, carbineers, pikeman, swordsman, tk's,etc. At first, it irritated the melee profs I was grouped with because I became the tank...taking their job. Made it real hard for them when I was still in the kite mindset and they had to chase the mobs around. Now, I stand my ground and they just stay around me and keep AB on our target and help me keep up with the heals.Rifleman definitely live up to the description of Nuker...if you know how to play it effectively.

It is a little different in PVP though. High defense melee, and ranged stacker templates will cut down your damage, especially if they have 8k energy armor and a good psg. Needless to say Jedi are out of hand in the GCW, and so you'll be fighting a bunch of cholos with force Aura which means you wont be able to hit them, or do damage if you do. Try to mass PVP with a rifleman and see how quick you are taken down by 1-2 Jedi right off the bat...they always kill the non Jedi characters first as we go down easier than Jedi.

The one reason to stay Rifleman is damage dealer. This profession allows you to solo a lot of quest that you may have trouble with if you werent a MR. Yes, you have to also have another combat profession like Carbineer or Bounty Hunter (both of which have the main damage dealing special , Adv Critical or Leg Shot). Now I am not saying that someone couldnt also be a MBH/MC for a lot of a damage and solo quest, I know they can and of course it is all a product of how you play your template, but MR is a good one to have.

When doing quest solo, I have used the conceal shots and sniper shots for a big advantage, and being able to snare a target is a big plus when you need to get distance fast.

Basically, when i dropped this profession the first time, i noticed the loss of the specials that I had learned to depend on and missed being able to sneak up on a target and then snipe them for 2500 to 5000 damage in one shot and then only having 3000 to deal with. I would keep the profession and if you are just getting bored with being your current template, then drop the other combat profession first.

I have the metallica song stuck in my head and your post didn't help me get it out of my head.
I do wish that the T21 was better than the ALR. I want people to fear me when they see the barrel of a T21 on the battle field, not think that I was stupid for not having an ALR or HLR.

Properly played the Rifle profession is one of the mose powerful fearsome professions in the game. We don't shine in large groups. Large groups tend to use poor tactics. Mass damage and little coordination are hallmarks of the typical 8 person group. Sure they bring down a mob fast and your get quick XP, but the rifle professional can't perform well inthat group, We go prone and snipe at long range and Drow aggro, Next thing you know the whole group is on top of you, or they are radomly attacking everything around a lair reating nothing but chaos.

We rule at solo or small 1 or 2 person groups. Using cordinated kiting tacticts. Atacking One Mob at a time drawing that Mob away from the lair, and having your mates hold aggro while you lay in with masive damage. But before you get aggroed you mates draw the mob back to them. It is an amazingly effective tactic that I have found can enable you to handle almost anything the game can throw at you. Add some Doctor and Bounty hunter now you are a effective soloist.

As a riflewoman I walk the terrain of Dathmore alone, I go sunning on the beaches of Yavin without fear, I can speak softly knowing my trusty T-21 is my big stick. As rifle professionals we control devastating power that is ours alone...

Welcome to Rifleman.

We can shine in large groups too, if people will let us play the profession the way it is intended to be played.

The problem is that a rifle does very, very poor damage at close range. The damage goes way up over 30 meters, and for some weapons seems to go higher the farther away you get.

Using cone attacks on a piket lair in which someone can hold the pikets at the lair, standing over 40 meters back, the pikets go down extremely fast. Standing at 15 meters, I do far more damage with my pistol.

The problem is that in spin groups, people want everyone within 5 meters of the lair. In that case, a rifleman is as good as useless.

Fortunately, I usually play with the same group of people. We've discussed the pros and cons of various attacks, and our solution was that I should stay at optimal rifle range, but not to expect heals at that range. If I need healing, I can either run in, stop damaging, or just let myself get incapped. With that arrangement, the damage dealt is impressive, and a typical piket lair will only take a couple of minutes in a good group. The problem is that the tanks typically need the healers close by, and they can't be running back and forth.

It's just a tactic, and there are many valid tactics. But in this situation, mulitplying damage per piket times the number of pikets hit in the cone, the damage dealt is phenomenal.

It's important to review the combat spam from time to time. With my favorite rifle, I'll hit for over 1000 per shot on an individual creature at 40 meters, but less than 300 at 4 meters. The cone seems a very narrow angle, so if I'm too close, only a few creatures will be caught in the cone. Farther away, I can hit the entire rosette around a tank at once.

The bottom line: the rifle is a fantastic weapon at rifle range, but don't try to make it do the work of a pistol.

Good post, by the way. Solo, the rifle really shines. I've even managed to bring down GDK's alone with a little luck and good cover.

I became a Rifleman because I was a Marine and it was the weapon I knew. In groups my Rifleman buddy and I lay prone at 65 Meters out and take out CL 83's before they reach us and move on to the next. Rifleman do alot of damage and as such will always be aggroed within any group. As someone in this post said we walk through Dathomir alone. It's true, I have grinded out as much xp by myself as with any group.

Rifleman are a breed apart, the other Prof's always want the Damage we do but not the Aggro but one comes with the other. Any smart group always wants one and you will always be "the Tank" whether you want to be or not.

And I wouldn't trade being a Rifleman for any other profession. Get yourself a Krayted T-21, have a Master Smuggler slice it for you and take that first Sniper Shot. When you're the one being aggroed smile with pride as the Jedi and TKM's in your party run to your position to attack. Nothing like cracking your opponent's skull open with a Firearm Strike and headshotting them as they lay on the ground twitching !!

Although I suggest a good set of Recon Armor first. (preferably sliced)

Enjoy !
