Thread: TKM or Fencer?

Well I'm going to revamp my character. I've kept the same build for too long, especially since it has more of a RP aspect then it does a usefulness one (I wanted to be a slicer since I started reading the Thrawn Trilogy) After playing around with math...then using a character builder since it was easier I can stay MRM, drop down to bare bones in marksman (am master now) grab novice medic, and master a melee profession and still have enough skill points to have a lot available to me in politician. In fact mastery of that if the need ever arose would only require dropping medic and some TKM/Fencer skills.

Well with that revelation comes a choice, what melee prof to master. Well being a pikey would be great for our block but I still get hit. And while there are amazing DOT lances out there...well I'd ratherbuy a small planet and save a few credits; so that's pretty much out. Swordsman seems alright but more based on being powerful and offensive and I get plenty of power with MRM so that's not really the best one for me I feel. After that comes TK and Fencer. Both are highly defensive, both have pro's that equal the other (meditate, good power, defensive, etc. stun baton for more stun goodness, defense up the wazoo, and good power) And, well I really just can't choose which one between the two. So rather thentrust a magic 8 ball I figured I'd ask around here. Well at least until the "ask again later" stops showing up

Well like I said I want to have a good bit of politician skill and well I'll quit my main and start fresh on a new server before I drop MRM so my options are really limited. I pretty much can only pick TKM or Fencer mastery. If I were to go half and half I wouldn't get past novice in one of the others so that's out. Heh, too bad my town would be pissed off at me if I pulled a Nero...although I can't even play a slitherhorn while the town burns I guess I'll just pick it myself, I was leanning a bit towards TK and since I have the prereq for novice thanks to smuggling it'll be right up my alley. Thanks a bunch for the help.

Bleh, everything seems to be FOTM.. and the months just keep rolling by lately

Fencer/Rifle seems to be fairly popular lately though and alot of the TKA/Rifle combos are becoming Fencer/Rifle, with TKA for the powerboost/force of will.. I would say do that, its a pretty strong combo. Fencer get great state defenses as well as ranged/melee defense and in PvE you can always switch to fencer if you're getting pounded and heal up while dodging every dang thing.

Swordsman/Rifle is gaining popularity as well but it seems more for those that want to solo krayts and things like that.

TKA/Rifle is still apretty solid combo though.. and especially good for PvE as well as PvP, and unless you have a static defense to run back to to tick off poisons meditate really isnt that great for beating CM's

Personally after using TK for a while I'd have to say Meditation and Powerboost do come in very handy and I'm going to try and keep it after I Master Pike, but if I had the choice you have I would probably go Fencer P.C... I have a good Friend who is Master Rifle / Master Fencer and she is a tough little bugger, The Knockdown Protection you get from Fencer really does help in PVP and somewhat it PVE as well. She Dodges alot as well, especially with the +Dodge Food Buff and COB turned on( Using a Fencer weapon of course ). Not to mention Fencer also has a Stun Weapon. Just my opinion.

Everything is flavor of the month, but I really don't care. When I pick a prof/build I go at it come hell or high water until it is either useless, orthe 2 profs becomemutualy exclusive...which would make it worthless I suppose. I don't mind being called a FoTM since I'll be there after a month I just want to get something more combative and less role-playish. Besides I'm a fighting mayor, a true warmaster. We are rarer then hen's teeth so I can just laugh off people labelling me as a cookie cutter build.

If I had to choose one, I'd choose TKA for the power boost/meditate. You'd have to weigh the cost of being only kinetic damage against that benefit. If you wanted to mix, 0440 fencer, 4400 tka is good. Fencer is becoming ever-popular due to its very balanced nature of high defenses and low damage being taken over by Godly-damage from outrageous acklay bone stun batons. So, if you're into PVP, fencer would probably be the best choice.

/ramble off. It's a tough decision. Damage types vs. unique skills and 1 damage type

Combat medic...

But really, I'd go with TKM, so you could run away and heal the stuff CMs throw. Seriously. Meditate is wonderful.

MRM/MHS gives you a very stong combo...not as uber as rifle/fencer combo for PvP, but better balanced for PvE, IMO. TKM is very nice, but reliance on kinetic, and soon to be, Heat Dam with upcoming black sun VKs leaves you lacking when it comes to dishing out damage against higher level mobs, which all seem to have high kinetic and heat resists. Both Fencer and TKM will allow you to really tank and adding their defensive skills to your existing rifle Def skills is nice, you just have to remeber that when you swap to melee, you will be doing nothing BUT tanking, no damage output, unless of course, you can lay your hot little hands on a nice set of Acklay bones for an uber-leet stun baton.

On the other hand, with the rifle/HSword combo, you can still be one hell of a tank AND crank out big damage numbers, with the benefit of having the same, ham-specific attacks. It's very rare that a PvE KD or Dizzy attack sticks on me and if I do end-up on my back, my ham hardly budges....

I was a TKM, and it was great. There was only one problem: the ability to only deal kinetic damage. Now they have been given an additional damage type:heat. On endor you can solo almost anything. Also you have the ability to hit whatever pool you want to, which really comes in handy with rifleman, since swordsman can only hit action.
