Thread: Rifleman in close comabt
i got to thingking about some things ...i was thinking waaay back in 96' when i was in basic training in the army and i remeberd all the wonderfull training they gave us on how to shoot our weapons accurate and i also remember how they taught us on how to fight aggressive and effective with our weapon in close combat hand to hand ..face to face with your enemy
so it got me to thinking about how backwards SWG has got it ..they have the 2.5 damage on us rifleman which yall know about
and that a pistol has a better defensive bounus than a rifle?
im sorry but a rifleman without ammo and forced to use his rifle as a melee type style of defending and attacking is a very effective and killer last ditch effort to save your ..well you know
one blow from a buttstock of a M-16 or dlt20a in this case heh ..will and should KD your apponent, knock them out, or kill them...and dont think that you cannot block someone swingin a board, polearm , sword, or whatever with you rifle ) .. because you can block a melee attack with your rifle ..not sayin that it might beat it up ..but you can block
it boggles me how a pistol is better defense at close range than a rifle.. i say again "defense" not attacking shooting wise ..even a carbine should have a better defensive bounus than a pistol.
it should go ...rifle best defense ..then carbine ..then the pistol the 2.5 damage for weilding it
i encourage dev A to talk to dev B ....go to bob's gun shop or whatnot
dev A pick up a nice .45
dev B pick up a nice .308
engage is a close combat melee type fight with them ....and submit testing results on why dev A is still in the hospital from a buttstock to the head , groin , throat ,wherever is fine and then replan for the 2.5 damage on the pistol.![]()

If they gave rifle better defence, better range, DPSandmind damage, whatwould be the point of going pistol?
umm i dont know, how about the most evil abilities in the game next to eyeshot and kd???...oh wait most pistoleers have eyeshot and knockdown...yeah jeez i cant think of any reason to learn pistol....

Eyeshot is a BH special, not Pistoleer. Knockdown was just nerfed. If you want to whine about them, get your facts straight first.
Magisteel, I admit I've never fired anything bigger than a airrifle (gun laws in the U.K. are very different to the U.S.A.), but I'm fairly sure a rifle will shoot at a longer range that a pistol. Therefore as you are making a rifle better at defence than a pistol based on real life, a pistol should also lose its ability to shoot at 64m, as the Devs have said they can't / won't increase the range of any gun above that. We already have mind damage over a pistol, and at master better DPS(this is balanced by the fact we damage our own mind).
Before anyone says pistols get mind damage, I'm talking about JUST pistoleer here, not BH. Saying pistoleers get mind damage islike saying riflemen canjust pull out a sword and do massive mind damage when people get close,which is wrong, only a rifleman/swordsman can do that.
Lonemech, I believe the pistols only ranged knockdown is being removed from them, added to that all knockdowns will be on timers. Pistolwhip on monks(TKA?) is more a problem with TKA(all melee?)than pistol, I do not see why a pistoleer should not have a great move against other RANGED users atclose range, maybe they should just call it "reflex shot" or something.
It is called game balance every hear of it?
I am personally getting sick of the "In real life" I dont care about real life, it should be used as a guide, but that is it. SOE wants to make sure that if a melee gets close enough to a rifleman he will crush the rifleman in short order.

Apart from the amount of time it takes to regen mind I'm fine if they just fix the rifleman bugs. I wouldlike tosee mind regenraised while sitting, but keep our ham costs the same, this way a rifleman has a limit on the amount of damage he can do, but doesn't have to wait around for his mind all the time.
Rifleman has no melee defense line. If they did they'd have buttstroke 1, overhead smash, and bayonet, etc.
Pistol has a melee defense line.
Now that I think about it, this is a game where the balance is rifle = long range, pistol = short range. If you're within 40 meters of your target with a rifle you're wrong or in a bad spot. Pistol damage increases dramatically under 30 meters.
IRLthe human skull is pretty soft compared to the butt of a rifle, or a pistol grip or barrel. I've seen people butt-stroked and people pistol whipped IRL. Either one will lay you out. Unlike the movies where a quick pistol whip simply knocks someone out for a bit,IRL even something as 'light' as a pistol whipto the skullwill leave the victimwith a very, very high chance of being impaired for the rest ofhis / her life,dead. It's better to take a pistol blow to the face than the skull. You may have a scar and need some bones / jaw fixed, but I'll take a scarred face over a messed-up mind anyday.
While in the Marines a casual friend of mine was pistol-whipped ONCE while being mugged in Washington DC. He had (I think) sub-durmal bleeding, not sure if that's right but it was bleeding in the brain. He 'recovered' in that he could never talk right, move half his face, walk right, or even smile normally again.
So, if the game was more like real life on average one hit from an opponent would leave you messed up for life.
End of story. Sorry about rant but I think my main point is this game cannot be compared to RL and pistol / rifle are in there to provide two weapons classes, each with their pros and cons.

Rifleman is long range combatant - right? I dont mind about close range accuracy - its trade off. If they cancel dmg multipliers for weaponstypes and make them stance based - fine, would be easier. But if we are long range combatants they should give us more options to keep our opponets on distance. Why two types of our special (flushingshot and startleshot) are raising our opponents? Instead of startleshot I would like to have Suppression Fire so I can decide if I want my opponent to come closer or not. If we can choose it, we dont have cry about close combat penalty. Period.
