Thread: The REAL reason the AOE corpse bug needs to be fixed

I have a screenshot but the text is too hard to read. Anyway, I was in the Genosian (sp?) caves today to hopefully finish the thing for once. I am a master rifleman so I thought a group of 3 or 4 could easily take this cave. Right at the beginning, I was fighting the genosians and was taking them out rather easily. Then I get two or three attacking me and I think no problem as I have nice comp armor and I was buffed very high. Then I experiance this bug from the other side of the table. Here is how the combat log looked in ONE second:

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for 2231 points of damage damage!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for 2191 points of damage damage!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for925points of damage damage, but you counterattack!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for1745 points of damage damage!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for2129 points of damage damage!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for870points of damage damage, but you counterattack!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for2265 points of damage damage!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe misses you!

17:49:21 Crazed Genosian uses Advanced Strafe on you for2129 points of damage damage!

And I was slain instantly. Note- My armor did not reduce ANY shot that hit me and it is top of the line (he was using disrupter rifle and I have 70% resist to acid)!

So I was dealt 12690 points of damage in one second from one creature.

Now suppose all those hit me (and the one that missed hit me for the average of all of them which is 1810) Iwould bedealt about 16225 damage in one second from one creature.

Please devs, this needs to be fixed. I lost 5% decay to my armor from this bug and countless others may have or will suffer from this. The reason I post this here is because I often see this issue here more than any place else. Any comments?

Sorry, not to derail your topic (that sucks! Really!) but how does the AOE corpse bug work? Does it try to spread the damage to all "targets" in its vincity, but since corpses can't take damage, all damage is redirected to a decidedly fewer living targets? Sorry, I've just never investigated the matter...

Click here for proof that the Devs hate Riflemen. And here's the kicker! (Seperate thread)

Making a good controversial point: Locked
Making a great controversial point no one can argue: Thread Deleted
There are few things you can post, for everything else, there's a CSR waiting.

Publish 7 will fix this from what they are telling me. I've yet to test it on the TC but, all professions with AOE are effected.

Yeah, DV, it looks like it is something like that. From my understanding of object level programming, it probably takes the shot, creates a list of all objects in the target area. Next it makes individual damage rolls for each of those objects, and records them on this list. Now you have a list of objects that were hit and the raw damage done to them. The next step would be to run down the list, and calculate and apply the actual damage done to each object on the list to the real object (i.e., character, NPC, Mob, Lair, etc.). The first object on the list would probably be the actual target. So it takes that object name and the raw damage done, and sends them off to the appropriate subsystem to assess the actual damage. Next, it grabs the next name from the list, and sends that name and damage doneto the subsystem to assess the damage done to that object, and so on, until it finishes the list. This all likely works fine when the targeted objects are all real objects that can actually take damage.

My guess for what happens with this bug is that, when the next objectto processisa corpse, this causes an object lookup problem within the calling program or the subsystem, and rather than skipping to the next name it simply "forgets" to change the object name, replacing only the damage number, and the old name gets sent back through with the new damage to be"hit" again. This effectively means that if a target is standing in the middle of a bunch of corpses being hit by the shot, all the "damage" done to those objects gets applied to the last good target. This can result in 20k+ hits depending on the weapon and special used and the number of corpses on the ground in the area of effect target area.

That may not be the actual process, but it likely explains pretty closely what is happening.

Omg....

So that iswhat happened to me at the cave, my god, I was housed there, just like that, with a spam laggy shot that killed me instantly. Full armor and Doctor buffs too.

I hope this gets fixed.

Note the bug works for us as well.

Yeah the cave is rampant with the bug.

Seems to happen a lot in caves.

Hey man, dont start trolling. Yes, 70 base is TOTL on naritus for composite armor sliced for encumb. I don't know what server you are from and what kind of money you have to spend but I think 70% is pretty nice considering I've seen 50% base armor for double the price I paid for this suit. Anyway, even if we can do this type of damage, I would rather NOT have 10k+ damage done to players as there HAM doesnt get above 4k.

Problem is I *think* this bug is the only viable use of the AoE's as they are, unless I am getting it wrong. I managed to put 8 stormtroopers under fire with flushing 2 and flurry 2, and got damage messages on each of them for each volley, but only the one I targetted actually took any damage.

Are others seeing this too?

Once all targets are engaging you AE's work just fine. Fanshotting groups of critters, for example, is a great, fast way to earn pistol exp (think of kiting a family of quenkers around.)

So let me get this straight. This aoe exploit is being used by riflemen (and other aoe attack classes) in PVP all the time now, but when a NPC uses it on you in PVE, you complain?

exactly.. i know dozens of people, most master rifles, who are profitting off AOE corpse bugs by reaping tons of combat xp (rifle xp too, in the case of flurry2 or flushing 2) and loot. it needs to be fixed for both reasons-- you getting hit that hard, and people like you hitting them that hard.
